I got one right away so one I wouldn’t forget it and then last minute scramble and pay more for it and two because when I registered her birth online with our government (I’m in Canada) it prompted me to order one so I just did it. And I’m glad I did because I just got my daughter her passport since we are leaving in May for Europe!

We got our little guy’s and needed it to back date our insurance because they didn’t add him correctly the first time, but I don’t think that’s really common place.

Since I had it already, we’re applying for his passport so we have one.

Outside of that, I can’t really think of a reason it’s needed, but I like having it so I can prove he’s ours without needing a rush fee or anything like that.

ClaudiaKishi :  Provincial! Since our health care is done provincially it was signing her up for her care card, SIN, and then the birth certificate at the end. We’re in B.C.!

We had to apply within 30 days, but I needed it for parental leave and health insurance.

We needed our daughter’s for her pediatrician and for our insurance, but we have TRICARE and they tend to do things a little differently. It was how we put her on our insurance.

I ordered one about 2 months after DS was born so I could apply for him to get Nexus. We were able to apply for his social insurance when registering his birth and haven’t needed the birth certificate it for domestic flying and there’s no extra cost for waiting so we could have held out until we needed a passport for him.

I’m in Canada so don’t know if this is relevant info for you. I’ve needed it about 4 times so far and my kid is 11.

The first was when she was 1 and I wanted to start her registered education savings plan. I needed it to apply for her social insurance number here, because you need it for setting one up.

Then again when she was 5 and I was going through divorce and had to prove she wasn’t his kid.

Then again when she was 7 to apply for her passport.

Once more again when she was 8, because CRA decided my kid wasn’t my kid wasn’t my kid and I was audited for claiming her but just for that year. Apparently they didn’t want to accept the photos my mother has of her crowning, and I’m the only person who has ever claimed her.

In the UK you have to register the baby’s birth within a certain timescale or you get fined.

I needed his birth certificate to get his passport and to register him at nursery and at the doctors. They were all in the first few months.

Twizbe :  The birth is registered by the hospital in the US, but then you have to go to the courthouse to get a birth certificate
