We had a 7-month engagement.  We probably registered about a month or two after getting engaged, mostly because both my mother and my Mother-In-Law would not stop asking me to register.  I think their friends were bugging them about it.  I found it pretty overwhelming and would have preferred to skip it, but I guess it’s nice to have a set of plates and a bunch of All Clad.

ETA: We didn’t have an engagement party, though, and since I didn’t want a shower my Maid/Matron of Honor hosted a co-ed dinner that is best described as an un-shower.  (No gifts, no games, no family other than my sister.)  Some of my parents friends did send us engagement gifts, but most of the registry purchases were wedding gifts.

We registered about 4 or 5 months before the wedding, well in advance of any showers, and I’m glad we did, because one of DH’s uncles sent us a Christmas gift from our registry. We registered online and never bothered to go in to a store. That might ease some of your anxiety. Just hop on your computer in the evening and find a few things you like each day.

@BetterSherm:  Is there anything you know that you want?  E.g., I found picking out plates and other aesthetic items more overwhelming than functional stuff like All Clad and the ever-popular KitchenAid.  Maybe you can start with that and hold off on china patterns for the time being.  You can also set up registries at more alternative places like Amazon.com if you don’t want traditional household items.

Honestly, if no one’s asked then I wouldn’t stress about it.  Maybe you will luck out and get lots of cash gifts!

Also, a dirty secret is that Bed & Bath will give you cash back for any items returned from your registry.  So, if you don’t want to be locked into your choices, register there first.

When is your bridal shower? It seems a bit early to be planning one for a wedding next March. Showers are usually 2 months before the wedding and invitations go out like 4 weeks in advance.

We just registered, 90 days out. We’re also not having gift showers or anything, I think the timelines are expecting engagement parties and showers and such. No one has asked about gifts, and I really haven’t expected them to. In our case, it’s a pretty small registry meant as “you really don’t have to get us anything, but here is some stuff that we’d be happy to get”.

We set up our registries about 6 months before our wedding, so we’d have the info for our save the dates. We still added/deleted things after that, though. I had kept a list for some time of what we might like to register for (we had a two-year engagement, so plenty of time to think about it). As a previous poster has noted, doing it 6 months before a March wedding also gives people the opportunity to buy you Christmas presents off of it, which isn’t a bad thing.

@BetterSherm:  You can set up a BBB registry online and add the things you already know you want.  That is how we got started.

We did ours about 5 months before the wedding. Our whole engagment is only 8 months long. I probably would have waited another month, but my family wanted the registry done so they could buy me birthday gifts off it, haha 🙂

We registered at month 2 of our 6 month engagement, so about 3.5 months out. I did have a shower, though.
