We had to sign ours at the courthouse in front of the clerk when we picked it up.  My dad and his mom signed it as witnesses after the ceremony.

In VA you sign when you pick it up, they give you a decorative one that is optional for you to sign & display.

During the ceremony.  I wonder if that’s a Canadian thing?  It’s been part of every ceremony I’ve ever attended as well.

Right after the ceremony. Our officiant wouldn’t let us sign it until we were officially married.

I actually did not need to sign anything, at any time.  Only one of us had to be present to obtain the marriage license, and only the pastor had to sign the license to indicate that he had performed our marriage ceremony. I was quite surprised by this, since I had always heard about people having to sign their marriage certificates.

Since my fiance’s brother is officiating our wedding, I guess we could just sign it whenever we want. But I’ll probably be superstitious about it and wait until after the ceremony!

We signed ours 5 days before our wedding because my brother was our officiant, and I wanted to be damn sure it was a legal marriage.

We signed ours at the clerk’s office when we picked it up– I didn’t realize it at the time, but when I inquired after the wedding they said they started having the couple sign right then to avoid costly mistakes (it’s over $100 to refile an incorrect license)– but it wasn’t valid until our officiant signed it after the ceremony.

We had ours signed after the recetion.  Our officiant was his aunt.

We planned on after the ceremony, but ended up doing it after pictures and before our entrance to the reception.
