I started as soon as we made the decision to TTC (so in our case, a couple of months before).

I actually started maybe… almost a year before hand?  See, we were thinking we would do family planning last winter/ fall, so I was taking them, but then I got diagnosed hypothyroid and we decided to wait to let my body adjust.  After 6 months, I then decided I would be happy if we became pregnant, or if I got into graduate school.  I then got pregnant right away, which was awesome, but I had not been taking prenatals at that point!  I had to wait for them in the mail, so I didn’t start taking them until after we knew.  I was taking folic acid and eating lots of it too.

My doc said ideal is 6 months prior so that the folate can build up in your system, but we do the best we can, don’t we?  Any vitamin with folate/ folic acid is fine.

We aren’t currently TTC, we are still 5/6 months out (unless we have an “oops”)… But I started taking prenatals a little over a month ago.  I read that the longer you take them the better off you and your future baby are.

My doctors (both GYN and GP) said to start at least 3 months BEFORE you’re thinking about TTC. And even earlier if you feel like it (since vitamins as a whole are good things).

If I had known I was going to get pregnant I would have started them sooner but our BFP was a bit of a suprise. I was just take a normal multi-vitamin with folic acid beforehand and some supplemental vitamin D with calcium.
