I’m sending STD 6 months in adance so technically I could wait until April to take them. However I’m chomping at the bit to do them probably because I booked my photographer today and he’s all kinds of awesome, ha.

We took ours right away, so about 11 months out! I was just so excited to get them done! We got ours back in a week but many photographers take longer, so give yourself plenty of time. I would plan on doing them at least a month or two before you plan to send out Save the Dates. You need time to get the photos back and then time to order and receive your Save the Dates, address them etc…Better not to feel rushed!

We were originally going to take them 9 months in advance during the summer, but then our province was hit by a massive flood and the area we wanted to go to was closed until further notice due to damage. So we waited a few months until the fall hoping that we’d be able to stick with our original plan, but there was still too much damage so we switched locations. I’m actually really happy we did, because they turned out awesome! We got them back 4 months before the wedding, about 6 weeks after we did them.
We didn’t do Save-The-Date Cards so timing wasn’t really an issue.

We booked our photographer in June, took engagement photos in October, and ordered STD’s in December (but we are waiting a month or so to send them out). It does take several weeks for the photographer to provide the edited photos with print release. I think we only waited 3 weeks, but I know people who had to wait 8+ weeks during the height of wedding season.
The only reason we waited is that we really wanted a fall engagement session. If that wasn’t a big priority for us, we probably would have done them earlier.

If you need to send them out 6 months in advance, I would order them 8 months in advance, so I’d take the pictures 9-10 months out, just to be safe!

We had a 3.5 month engagement, so we didn’t do STD’s or anything. We mailed our invites a few weeks earlier instead. Our engagement pictures were taken 2 months in advance.

We did ours in February and got married in October.

The turn around time on them is 2-3 weeks at most so that I’m not super worried about.

@mixtapehearts: i took mine on the 1 year mark of our engagement which was 10 months before the wedding but we didn’t use our engagement pictures for the Save-The-Date Cards.

We did them about 2 months out from the wedding
We wanted nice weather so I could wear a dress and not be cold.
We also wanted a lot of green so we waited for flowers to bloom
I didnt want to use the images for STD’s so I was in no rush to get them out…..

@mixtapehearts: We took out 10 months out. We sent our STD out’s 8 months out in advance because we are getting married on a holiday weekend. It took about two weeks to get our images from the photographer. Then another two weeks to get the STD’s from vistaprint. The hardest part about getting the STD’s out were getting the guest list down!

We were engaged in Sept 2012. Took e-pics in late October 2012. Married Oct 27, 2013. I sent out Save-The-Date Cards at about the 5 month mark. I’d meant to send them at 6 months, but I got busy with work and they didn’t get finished in time. 🙂 I ordered them through Shutterfly and they took about 2 weeks to arrive after ordering online.
ETA: Our photographer got them back to use within a couple of weeks. Check with your photog to see how long it will take to receive the pictures, and factor this into your timeline.

@mixtapehearts: we did 2 sets – one just after getting engaged with a friend who’s a new photographer (those were about 1 year out) and then another set with our wedding photographer because it’s part of our pacakge (those were about 7 months out)

- Wedding: June 2014 - Ontario, Canada ♥ EDD- April 2016
We did them fall 2012 and we’re getting married summer 2014 (: We obviously did ours super early, but we both really wanted to do them. If we had wanted summer shots then we would have done them a year before our wedding, but we wanted the colours of the leaves and stuff so we chose fall. We had to do fall 2012, because we felt that fall 2013 was too close to the wedding.

I’m taking mine like 2 months before the wedding…kinda late to the game but whatever, I want some nice pictures of us!
