Hmmm. I’m not sure of this either. I think my Fiance and I might go in July or so… that would be about 6 months out. We’re going to have them draw a design up for us. Nothing really fancy though.

We ordered ours just over a year before the wedding but I don’t think it has to be done that far in advance – we just wanted to get it done when we were getting everything else booked.

I ordered mine 14 months in advance- I’m planning from out of state and it was the only time I could meet.

My baker just did an interesting blog post about the timing of client booking.  http://networkedblogs.com/xkRcM.  It basically talks about how it will be hard to get an appointment with bakers during their busy “wedding season.”

My wedding was November 27th and I ordered the cake in July.  I only ordered that soon to get it out of the way.  Honestly, the cake doesn’t necessarily need to be done asap.  The only issue is if you have a popular date and are using a busy bakery.  They only take so many cakes for the day.  The best thing to do, call the bakery and ask them how far in advance they suggest.

Sidenote:  I ordered a cake for 60 people (looked like a mini 2-tier square wedding cake) for a “gender reveal” party and I ordered it on a Tuesday and the party was on Friday.  No problem at all!

@MadameTussaud:  I know, super early.  Most bakers just have you do a deposit at booking, so you could change your numbers around before the final bill is due.

We ordered ours about 6 months before the wedding. I had heard great things about a local baker who books up pretty early so we didn’t want to wait. We just have an estimate right now and within the month before the wedding, we’ll be giving her a final count.

@MadameTussaud:  We also found the numbers didn’t need to be locked down that far in advance. Our baker gave us an estimate based on our best guess on guest numbers, and charged us a 50% deposit based on that number of slices. We agreed to give her the final guest number two weeks in advance of the wedding date. The final amount we pay will be based on the difference between the actual number of guests and the deposit amount we payed, not on the estimate we gave her last year.

We ordered ours 10 months in advance, had the tasting 1.5 months in advance and will pay the deposit on May 28th.
