I would try to at least start a registry before you get super tied up with other wedding projects. You can start a registry or two and go back and add or delete things as necessary. FI’s aunt threw us an engagement party and wanted us to register for a few things before that so people could bring a gift if they choose to (people did use the registry even though we didn’t expect present). We went back a few months later and finished it up and have edited our lists online ever since.

we registered about 5 months in advance. things can get discontinued and styles/trends change so much, so i wouldn’t do it too far in advance. people don’t usually start buying gifts until just before your shower, so it’s not going to be a major inconvenience for anyone if you wait. if you’re having an engagement party, it may be a good idea to put together a small registry and then add to it as your wedding draws nearer.

We registered about halfway through our engagement (1 year before the wedding). We could have waited a lot longer, but it was a day when we had time to do it. I think you can register anytime you want, but its probably easier if you start it now and plan on updating it a couple times between now and the wedding.
