If you’re going to have a registry, it’s probably best you register before your shower (if you’re having one) and before the invites get sent out.  But it’s never too early to register.

We’re getting married August 4, and we just finished our registry last weekend.  It took us a few weeks to look around and decide on which items.

I’m getting married in September, and I registered in February. DF’s family wouldn’t stop asking if we’d done it yet, so we went ahead and did.

Definitely do it before the shower or invites go out though.

We put together a small registry at the request of Fiance parents before our engagement party in August and then we finished up our registry a few weeks ago. I wanted it done before our Save-The-Date Cards went out just in case…

We put ours together last weekend because our engagement party is this coming weekend and my family was already asking what we wanted.  We’ll probably continue to update it for a while, but at least it gave people some directions.  I woud say to have it up before the parties start.

my shower is going to be in july and the wedding is in september. we’re going to start ours next month. we’ve been looking around and we pretty much know what we want from which stores, we just need to get it done.

someone above said it’s never too early to register and i slightly disagree with that. if you register too early, by the time people start buying gifts (usually right before the shower) some items on your registry may be discontinued or out of season. things like appliances or dishes, you could do pretty early on and they probably won’t be going anywhere. but seasonal/trendy items may disappear within a few months. i don’t think that’s something you really need to worry about at this point, tho.

Sometime before shower invites go out (if your having one).  I’m getting married on the same day and My Fiance and I have been slowly working on your gift registries online for the past month or so, even though my shower isn’t until June.

If you’re having an engagement party, you may want to register for a few things right before. It also depends on the stores. Target is one for being notorious with having items discontinued! Also, things can disappear off your registry, so keep that in mind. We started our Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Macy’s registries in January, and a Target one in February. I’m having three showers in April and a fourth in May. It was nice having at least two months before our first shower to look at the registry, make changes if need be, and all of that good stuff. It is tempting to want to check the registries often (or at least, it is for me)!

It took us quite a bit of time to register. We got everything done basically in a weekend, because we currently live apart. We spent about 5 hours at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, 2 hours at Macy’s, and then about 2 hours at Target. We’re also pretty much starting from scratch on things. Fiance has some things from the grad school days, but we’ll mainly be starting over. BBB was the most accommodating for us. They would bring us water, they held our coats and my purse in a locked room…I really liked registering there!

@keepsmiling19:  that’s good to know, as we’re registering at those stores too. my fiance and i also live apart, so we’re going to try to get it all done in one weekend.

My wedding is in November and we finished our registry in February.  I will say that it may not be as simple as you think to register.  It took me a decent amount of time to come up with lists of things that we needed, and from which store we were going to register different items (we registered at 2 stores).  Also, I agonized over what china/crystal pattern to get, so that was an unexpected bump!  If your wedding is in August, I would make sure to start thinking about registering at least a month before your shower invites go out.

@lilchicana:  Good deal! I had a little bit of an idea how long it would take. Poor Fiance did not. We arrived at BBB at 1:00, and he asked if we should eat lunch before or after registering. In order to not scare him, I said that I was hungry then, so we should go now. We started off by asking so many questions at BBB, then finally, we just started scanning. We also did a lot of editing online!

My other advice is if you know anybody else who has started a registry, or anybody who has gotten married in the past two years (BBB and Macy’s keep registries until two years after the wedding date), you may want to look at theirs. Fiance and I did that, and we realized we had left a few things off. It did help!

@JlovesM:  You are very welcome! I also noticed that many times, things would go missing on our registry. They hadn’t been purchased or anything, they would just disappear. Then, when I would go back and re-add them, it turned out I had added about three extra. Fiance and I both love Target, and even though we heard some bad things about their registry, we still decided to go there. I do check up on that registry often, just in case.
