Well we’re anticipating snow here in Pittsburgh this week, so heat is definitely on. That doesn’t mean it’ll be on next week though, we have crazy weather sometimes.

Our house must get pretty cold, because I turned it on over a month ago!  We have the thermostat to turn off at like noon on the weekends because we shouldn’t be home then (trying to encourage ourselves to go out into the world!), but when we’re there at that time it is frigid.  I’m a normally warm person, my inner furnace burns hot, so when I start freezing it’s enough justification to turn on the heat again.

When I am freezing.  I am usually cold but if I’m wearing my usual sweats/slippers and still cold, I will turn it on.

I voted November, though, because I try really hard to wait until at least Nov 1 for that!  It’s just getting cold in the last couple of days here, so shouldn’t be a problem to wait for Nov 1 this year.

We do it when the apartment gets to the low 60’s during the day. Usually around when it snows, or Mid-late November when it goes on for the season. If it warms up for awhile we turn it back off, it takes a month or so for MI to commit to winter.

We’re still sleeping with our windows open, ha. We leave the heat off until pretty late. We sleep with a big duvet and warms pjs, and we’re in a townhouse with other homes on either side so our place is well-insulated.

I turned my heat on in my apartment about 2 days ago. I was frozen and I live on the third floor, so like you, I thought heat would rise and I could wait a few more weeks to turn it on.

@BellaDee:  I live in ND, and we are already getting snow so you bet your sweet patootee that our heat is on (very low though but it is on). We don’t quite have a set day, usually if it snows or once the temps consistently  get down to the freezing temps.

When it gets uncomfortably cold in the house.  We haven’t turned it on yet – I haven’t decided yet, but it might happen today.  I’m sitting in my office with a space heater cranked up by my feet, and my fingers are still freezing (my building on campus also hasn’t turned on the heat yet, which everyone has been complaining about today as the high is under 50).  We’ll see how it feels when I get home!

Generally, we put on sweaters and sweatshirts and thick socks first – if we can bundle up and stay comfortable, the heat stays off.

I live in FL. The heat goes on once a year. I’m pretty sure the heat in my apt is broken actually, we meant to get them to fix it last year….but it seriously comes on like 3x a yr so we never got around to getting someone to fix it lol

If I’m still cold with a sweater and one or two blankets.  I can also tell my cats are getting cold because they pile up together to keep warm.

@BellaDee:  Upstate NYer here!  We’ve had our heat on, on and off for about the past week and a half.  It definitely drops to freezing at night and we need to have it on!

New Englander– I tried to hold out to November, but we had temps in the 30s last night, so I had to!

We turn it on when I can’t get out of bed in the morning because it’s too cold! But seriously, we have an energy-efficient heating/cooling unit and we’re about to get new windows because I don’t want to have to stress about the heating bill. And the heating bill is money wasted, but a new furnace and new windows are an investment!
