Usually there is a deposit taken, then the rest of the payment after you get clean bill of health from the vet.

Deejayelle:  One of my friends just bought a puppy from a breeder (he brought it home this weekend and it is adorable).  He paid a deposit (half of the total price) when he picked her out, then paid the other half of the price when he picked her up two weeks later.

Usually you pay a deposit and then pay off the dog when it goes home. I’ve only purchased one dog from a breeder and everything was up front when the dog was taken home, there was no deposit. However I bought the last dog so I really didn’t need one.

Deejayelle:  We put down a deposit when we decided on a breeding pair and got off the wait list (6 months before the litter was conceived), upon understanding that we would be refunded or could transfer it to another pair if the breeding didn’t ‘take’. We paid the balance when we picked up our puppy.
