I am definitely doing the cake cutting till after dinner is served but possibly cutting it while people are almost done eating.

We’re having an afternoon reception with hors d’oeuvres, so we’ll probably just wait for an hour or so after the start of the reception to cut the cake and do toasts. That should give everyone a chance to mingle a bit and pick at meatballs and cheese platters.

we’re doing toasts first, then dinner, then cake cutting.

Our cake cutting was about 30-45 minutes after dinner, toasts done before dinner.

The only time I’ve seen a cake cutting done immediately is at my nephew’s wedding — and it wasn’t done b/c it was planned that way, but b/c the cake was collapsing.

It’s up to you, but I don’t like to break up dinner or dancing with random things like cake cutting (we also aren’t doing bouquet or garter tosses). We’re doing our cake cutting immediately upon entering the reception. Then my dad gives a welcome, then we’ll have dinner, then between dinner and dessert will be toasts. It’s all up to you though! Just think of what other weddings youve been to that had a good flow!

I’m confused as to the reasoning…

Do they not want to have to keep staff at your event past dinner?

We did buffet dinner and then the cake was served tableside after the dishes from dinner were long cleared.

The cake cutting is usually the last “event” of the night, and is the cue to guests that they can leave at their leisure after. So doing it before dinner, or even while dinner is still happening could make for an early departure for some guests.

We had a plated dinner. After dinner we had the toasts, the cake cutting and the first dance in that order.
