I’m due March 23 and my husband will graduate with his bachlors degree April 3rd. I really want to be at his graduation but I know that I will not be able to if our daughter is too young.
I also know that I cannot control when my daughter comes but I was wondering how long after she is born is it safe to take her out in public? I may have my mom or someone watch her so I can see my husband graduate but I’m still not sure about that.
I will be 38 weeks on March 9th so i’m kinda hoping she goes early so I don’t have to worry about it but I want her to be ready to come out and not rush her.
Thanks ladies if you were able to follow along.

It’s fine to take her out right away! Old wives’ tales say to keep them indoors for 6 weeks to avoid germs but that’s completely unnecessary. We took our daughter to stores and restaurants in her carrier when she was a week old. Life goes on, you just have the baby in tow! She will probably sleep right through the graduation in her carrier.

What does your pediatrician say? Some are much more conservative than others. My daughter’s pediatrician was very much like- “take your baby out when you want to”- so I took my daughter to a baseball game when she was 9 days old! I know some mom’s whose pediatrician’s told them they shouldnt take the baby out for 3 months (which to me sounds a little extreme). I would ask your doctor.

Yea when I had my first daughter I was 17 and my mom wanted chinese so we left the hospital and went to the restraunt to eat. My Mother-In-Law is big on my not taking her bc of it not being healthy for her.

I don’t think there’s any consensus, I’ve known people who have gone out the day after they get out of the hospital and some that stay inside for weeks. I don’t think I’ll be going to any super enclosed places (I’m actually most worried about baby well visits at a doctors office with lots of sick kids around) but I hope to go out and about and get some fresh air with her soon after she’s born. She’s going to have visitors whether we leave the house or not.

My mom apparently took me hiking in a Snuggly (baby carrier like the Baby Bjorn) 7 days after I was born.
I think so long as the baby doesn’t have any auto-immune issues or is colicky and crying all the time, she’ll be fine to take out whenever.

My mom took me to the mall two days after I was born! 🙂

I don’t have a baby but it seems like you are ok to take baby out whenever so long as it’s not extreme cold or hot outside and properly bundling the baby obviously. 😀
I’m going to have some pretty strict rules that I may or may not follow to some extent after I give birth courtesy of Chinese customs & traditions. 🙂

I know my mom took my little sister camping (big family reuniun) when she was only a few weeks old… like < 3 weeks

A lot of ppl take babies out early these days. If you are comfortable with it, go for it if your pediatrician is okay with it.
As for me, I’ll be going old school in this area.LOL

My first trip to the mall was when I was only a week old! I think that’s why I love shopping so much:)

I took my daughter out I think at 7 days old. I took her for walks outside in the snuggly all the time, to the market, to restaurants, and to a 4th of July cookout/camping trip (we slept in the house) all within the first 2 weeks. No biggie!
The only thing I actually did avoid were dogs.
