My wedding is in June (a little over 5 months) and I went to see my doctor in December and got my prescription then.  I just started taking it yesterday (based on the Dr.’s recommendation).  She seemed to indicate that I was in good shape starting it with about 6 months before because I could allow for time to adjust and if I have an adverse reaction we would still have time to switch before the wedding.

I would say aim for about 6 months or so before your wedding.  (We are not sexually active either – and I would gently advise not starting it too early or it might cause an additional temptation……just saying).

@katy13:  I would definitely encourage you to let your fiance be part of the decision process.  I was nervous about which kind to choose and side-effects, etc. and my fiance was a huge comfort through that process.  He also helps me remember to take my pill and it just feels nice know that it is our decision and something we are choosing to do together.

I do understand that you want to protect him from feeling tempted.  But if you wait until a little bit closer to the wedding and you are prepared for the temptation to happen….you’ll get through it!  🙂

Best of luck and send me a message anytime if you have any other questions or just want to talk about it.  It’s a big deal.  🙂

Aside from possibly having complications there’s no reason to start more than a month or two out. My Boyfriend or Best Friend and I are waiting (mainly for him to save up to buy a ring) but we have already discussed getting married within a month after he proposes. hopefully he can get the ring in the month. Anyway, I just started BC this month mainly because I just had my annual appt and didn’t want to make another one (an another copay ) just for a BC prescription.A

Birth Control pills can cause weight gain (or loss sometimes) or increase your bust size.  I wouldn’t start taking it 1 month before the wedding because it could affect the way your dress fits and you might not have time for alterations!

Also, the wrong pill for you (it varies by person) can cause moodiness, acne, or even depression! If you start it now, you can perhaps have time to make a switch to a different pill before your wedding.  I’d definitely start it sooner rather than later.  Or use condoms after you are married and then start the pill.  Good luck!

@katy13:  I’d probably start it about 3 months before the wedding.  1 month would probably be fine but if you’re worried about side effects those extra 2 months should give you lots of time to adjust.

yes that would probably be best. I doubt you’d need to start a year out though. If you guys have waited this long i’m sure the temptation wouldn’t be too much to handle for 3-6 more months. Good luck.

I’m happy to see there are so many of us who are waiting!!!

I vote for the 6 month mark.  The way birth control affects people is highly individualized, and there are many common side effects you could experience that will require some tinkering by your doctor.  For example, if you start with a higher dose combination product, you are more likely to experience decreased sex drive.  That would necessitate a change in therapy.  If you start with a lower dose product, you may be more likely to experience spotting, which could either go away with time or require a prescription change.  Most importantly, if you want to avoid a high potential for mood swings,  ask for a monophasic form of birth control rather than a triphasic one.  Good luck!!
