Stop taking BCP and start taking prenatals the month that you are ready to get pregnant. You never know how long it will take but don’t count on it not happening right away. Well you can really start taking prenatals anytime now. Ortho lo is a low dose pill so it’s possible you will regulate right away. Every woman is different and you really can’t predict how it will go.

My doctor recommended that I start taking prenatals a minimum of three months before starting to TTC. They’ve done wonders for correcting several vitamin deficiencies, but she was particularly interested in making sure I was getting as much folic acid as possible. If you’re planning on TTC in March, grab some o-t-c ones with at least 1000 mg folic acid and start now.

I’d start the prenatals now — there is no downside to being on them ahead of time.  I started in advance with over the counter gummies and then when we got serious I got a prescription from my OB.

I personally would stop the BC and start the prenatal now. That way you have a few months for your body to get back to its normal cycle.

biologistmommy:  I just asked my doc the question about whether or not to wait a few months after stopping the pill before TTC. She said that in the past, it was a common belief that waiting up to 3 months was safest. However, more recent research has found that many women get a surge in hormones the first month or so after stopping the pill, so this could actually be the best time to TTC. Just wanted to share because that question had been bugging me for quite a while! (:

My dr told me to start taking prenatals 6 months before ttc because it takes awhile for certain things to build up in your system. I would stop taking BC whenever you are ready to get pregnant. You may get pregnant the first month, or it may take a couple months for your period to come back. You never know what your body will do, but its better to be ready to get pregnant.

biologistmommy:  Well i am on prenatals  now and i am still on BC just because I wanted to give  my body time to get used to the prenatals before we even thought of getting off the BC. It has been super helpful wwith hair/nail growth lol

I’d start the prenatals now, but don’t go off BCP until you’re sure you’d be happy if you were to conceive. Unless you’re going to use a different method of contraception (e.g. condoms) between now and when you start TTC.

biologistmommy:  As a pharmacist, you can start prenatals now and you can stop the contraceptive pill 2weeks before …it is believed that you are most fertile the first time you ovulate after you stop taking the pill…therefore average is 14days after stopping the pill.

my doctor told me it was a myth about having to come off BCP earlier than TTC. I did anyway. I came off it a year before we started TTC. My cycles regulated straight away. We are on cycle 3 now TTC. The pill had no factor here. Healthy fertile couples can take up to a year once they start TTC, I just didn’t want to contend with messed up cycles too. I started prenatals about 2 months before TTC. I really think a lot of TTC is just down to pure luck! I’d prob be in the exact same boat if I had just stopped BCP when we started to TTC.
