It’s so hard to advise, because everyone’s different. All anyone can do is give you their own experiences for you to make your own decisions with.

I went off in June and had a wonky couple of cycles before things got back to “normal,” although I still have a bit of variation in my cycle length (30-40 days) so who knows. I honestly had very few negative side effects from going off BC — greasier hair and skin, but not much in the way of acne. My periods actually got a bit easier and my libido went up.

We also did not mind using alternate forms of protection before TTC, so that’s a personal preference issue. And while an oops would have been a bit of a scramble to deal with, we were okay with that risk.

Like I said, all personal things. In my experience, it was nice to go off BC 5-6 months before TTC because it gave me time to get used to my cycle, but then again I might feel differently if I had experienced a lot of side effects. Either way, good luck to you!

I agre with brlabrat:  Its a very personal decision. I will tell you my experience….I went off the pill in February 2014 and didn’t get a normal period until June 2014. After that my cycles were anywhere from 34 days to 45 days. Im still not “regular” and we have now started TTC. I didn’t have very many noticeable side effects….a bit of acne on my face, major back acne (ew), I lost about 5 lbs….nothing major though. While we were not TTC, we did use condoms. It was sort of annoying but we were not willing to take the risk of getting pregnant earlier then planned.

Good luck!

I was on the pill for 10 years, and my last pill was two weeks ago, then i immediately had my period.  I ended my period on Sunday (6 days ago) and haven’t had any side effects from not taking it.  In fact, i’m eating more and haven’t gained any weight, which is totally weird.  I want to TTC in February so that is why I am giving myself a few months off beforehand.  Everyone is different, but I say give yourself 3 months off the pill. So you are good for another 7 months at least.

It’s a complete shot in the dark how you will react.  My SIL got pregnant 2 weeks after stopping BC.  My 1st and 3rd cycle were 90+ days, it took me almost 8 months to get back to normal.  Based on my personal experience, I’d air on the side of caution and stop asap, but I’m sure I’m an outlier.

It’s a personal decision, but there aren’t any health reasons why you have to go off the pill before TTC.  Personally, I’m on about the same time frame, and won’t go off the pill earlier.  My period was irregular anyway before I went on the pill, and usually when you go off the pill your period resumes as it was before.  We aren’t in any rush to conceive right away.  We want to start off TTC by just simple stop preventing it (because we are still young and not in a rush).  We used condoms at the beginning of our relationship, but I become really sensitive to them and started to develop an allergy so we really don’t want to use another form of birth control, and to conceive earlier would be a challenge (we are moving across country).  It just depends on what makes sense for you.
