Are you having a shower? That will also affect when you should register. I am getting married in November and we started registering in July. I will say that registering took longer than I expected, mostly because my fiancé (unexpectedly) had strong opinions about some things (colors, dishes, bedding). I don’t think December is too early to register or at least to start thinking about what you want to register for!

We registered right after we got engaged because we were so excited! We loved it because his parents threw us an engagement party and we got a lot of stuff from our registry. We did one at BB&B and Macy’s. There were a few changes we had to make closer to the wedding, but for the most part, our wants stayed the same and the items were still in stock. Plus, I used it as a Christmas gift guideline since my Mother-In-Law always wants a list.

I suggest from my experience to register just a few weeks before your shower invitations are mailed out. Often stuff is discontinued.

We got married 11 days ago, and registered in June, shower end of Aug and there were a lot of items not available on the registry by the time the shower was held.

If you are anxious, I would say Dec/Jan at the earliest

I’ve already started setting up a registry. I say just get started! I wouldn’t mix it with Christmas though unless your guests choose to do so. If you have a way to get your registry information out i.e. via a wedding website printed on your Save-The-Date Cards or Invites, then I’d do it that way.

You  might consider an “alternative registry” too. If you’re moving 1000 miles soon, it’s going to cost quite a bit to pack all of your new stuff up and ship it. It might be wise to look into a cash registry or a honeymoon fund or request gift cards or something so you don’t run into the moving problems you’ll have if you get a whole bunch of “stuff.” Some people may not think the cash/honeymoon registries are etiquette friendly, but I would hope that your guests would understand you not wanting to spend a ton of money shipping all of the stuff they bought you! Not to mention that, instead of a nicer toaster, you could pool the money and spend it on a sofa or dining set that you may need for the new place!

Just my two cents! Good luck!

Our bridal shower was 4-5 weeks before the wedding. A friend of mine had hers 2 weeks before her wedding. I am not sure there is a rule…but for me 4-5 weeks before got me into the wedding spirit again

if you’re having an engagement party, register before the invites go out. people will most likely bring gifts to that party! we had to scurry to set up a registry, because we were getting harassed by family. πŸ™‚

i would say go ahead and do it. It was one of the first things we did after we got engaged. It was such a fun experience for both of us. Plus we sent our registry info out with our save the dates in early september.

We are starting our registry on Saturday and we’re 7 months out! I think my Mom will be throwing a shower for me when I make the trip home at Christmas (I won’t go home between then and the wedding).

We registered 9 months ahead of time because each of our moms are throwing us an engagement party. We’ve already gotten 15 things off our registry! Surprised

The only thing is if you register early, you have to keep checking your registry to make sure items aren’t discontinued or out of stock. We registered right around the 6 month mark and items on our registry kept changing.

@missbangbang:  Don’t worry.  I’m getting married on March 5, 2011 and haven’t even thought about it yet!  I’m not sure when our first shower will be yet (or even how many there will be), but December at the earliest.  Hopefully we’ll be able to get to it some time in November.
