I have heard you need to buy the dress 6 months before at the very least.

I haven’t gone dress shopping yet. My wedding is 8/27/11.

I think I have dress shopping anxiety! LOL

My original date was 11.11.11 and I started looking about a year and a half out. I’d say now is an okay time to start, but once you’ve found “the one,” STOP LOOKING or you’ll drive yourself nuts!

I guess it depends, really.  There are dresses out there that takes 4-6 months before it even arrives.  In my case, I found my dress on a sample sale…for the dress I tried on is the dress I bought ๐Ÿ™‚

Then you have to take into account the fittings and finding the correct height shoes that would go with the fitting.  And then, if you don’t want to pay for a rush-job alteration, you may wanna give at least two weeks to maybe a month.  It also depends on the amount of alteration and how complicated the dress will be to alter. For example, my dress is heavily laced and beaded…and it needs to be about five inches shorter ๐Ÿ™‚  A dress like this will take longer to alter than a plainer satin dress.

From what I’ve seen online, some people start shopping about a year before the date because you can’t guarantee that you’ll find your dress ASAP.  I’ve forgotten how many dresses I’ve tried on before finding THE DRESS ๐Ÿ™‚

And, I totally agree with StatutoryGrape.  Once you find the dress…STOP LOOKING ๐Ÿ™‚

If you wait then you can see the next collection coming out, so there is advantage for that.  I started looking right after I got engaged and did not even pick out a dress until 6 months later anyways.  So if you wait too long then you might not have enough time to find what you want, on the other hand if you look to early you have lots of time to second guess yourself too.

I would say about a year beforehand… Mind you, I just bought my dress and my wedding isn’t until August 2012… I was looking for something very specific and once I found it I called all the stores that sold that designer until I found one that had a sample of the dress (I called over 10 stores before I found it… including stores that were across the country). I tried it on and about 5 other dresses and decided to get it (I couldn’t resist the payment plan they had for it… I only have to pay $56 a month until May 2012). But be careful of buying too early because there are many 2 or 3 dress brides out there!

@FutureHarp: I am holding out till January also for the same reason. LOL! But I know I have to start looking no later than January because I’m a size 0 street, and most of the Bridal stores I’ve called normally only carry size 6 as the smallest size they have. Which means, I’ll probably have to order mine.

@FutureHarp: My sister and I are both engaged and we grew up in Katy too! We visited Houston for dress shopping, so maybe this will be helpful? Her dress is from Ventura’s (Maggie Sottero) and mine is from Houston Bridal Gallery (Pronovias). One was ordered in January and one in July, and they both took right around three months to arrive.
