This is why I hate shopping so much (plus I’m a bigger size so that doesn’t help matters). I’m 23 and I’m not sure where I’m supposed to shop and to add, I’m not a petite size and I’m on the larger end of the Women’s section, so I go and look in the plus size and all the stuff there is for women in their 40’s with weird prints and the stuff just hangs off of me.

@beekiss: Exactly…the weird prints are usually what turn me off, too…and some of the “boxier” cuts…

@harleyq: I’m 33 and still venture out in the juniors department. Granted there are some things that I simply say are too young for me, but I say you like something, go for it!

two words….online shopping. yep i still buy stuff from forever 21 and im 28. mostly shoes and a thing or two here or there. I refuse to think of myself as too old to be trendy. Im not letting anything hang out and I am not buying like club dresses or something. so I dont see anything wrong with it. I feel like the women’s sections in a lot of department stores are just too matronly for me still. But again it doesnt bother me much to shop wherever i want because ill just do online shopping so no one sees me π going into the store….whole other story.

@mrs_pugetsound: Agreed, they do seem quite boxie and I like longer tops and I have a much smaller chest than most plus size women so that doesn’t help matters either.

I’d say around 23, when I was past my crazy ” I need a new cute top to wear to the bar every night” stage. Usually at places like Macys I just stick to the brands I know aren’t going to be frumpy; I like Calvin Klein, Lucky, DKNY, etc. I still shop at places like Express or the Limited for some things too, but places like Forever 21 and abercrombie I don’t care for any more.

@mrs_pugetsound: and
@beekiss:
i actually like the boxier stuff, and i’m small chested too. as i got older, I became less comfy with form fitting stuff, so i love the loose tops and i’ll just wear a belt at the waist. i feel like i can manipulate my figure better with this by setting my own waist.

I just don’t think I’ll ever wake up one day and be happy if my entire closet is full of this:

Not that there is anything wrong with that if it is your style, but I don’t think I’ll ever want it to be mine. π And that I feel like that is what a lot of the clothes I’m digging through in the Women’s sections look like. I think as long as you are dressing in a way that flatters your body type, isn’t obscene, and makes you feel happy and comfortable…it shouldn’t matter what section you are browsing.

@mrs_pugetsound: Ditto. I always wonder if that will happen to me one day. I always think one day I’m going to be this old 80 yr old woman with arthritis and back problems going “you know…an elastic waist band WOULD spare me the trouble of breaking my fingers with buttons…” especially after watching QVC hawk that Quacker Factory line where the sellers actually use those words to sell their granny jeans
I wanna be a hot grandma π

I’m almost 29 and still sometimes end up browsing the juniors section for certain things. For things like summer dresses and basic tee’s the juniors section offers low cost options. And in some stores (like Kohls or Pennies) have little to offer the late 20 and 30 year old crowd, but sometimes you can find a win in there Juniors section.

@mrs_pugetsound: hahaha hilarious.
If you’re shopping in the section that carries that, it might be the reason you aren’t finding anything. Most department stores have a misses department with brands like rachel roy, bar III, lucky, free people, etc.
I think those departments are specifically geared towards 20 and 30 somethings and I would be surprised to see a 50 year old in there. Impulse at Macy’s TBD at Nordstrom and pretty much all of Bloomingdales.

WOW!! Im 30 and I still do the majority of my shopping in the juniors department. I’m a jeans and tee shirt kinda girl and the junior size clothes just fit better. I stick to the plain stuff though. When I wonder over into misses everything is too big. I need an extra small in misses and that’s kinda hard to find. Reading these posts makes me feel really old π

@Meowkers: LOL…okay, I admittedly picked an “extreme” version of what I sometimes see. I get what you are saying though!! It is there, perhaps just in different stores. π
@harleyq: I laughed at “hot grandma.” π I had a conversation about this with an older coworker the other day. She is in her late 50’s and also refuses to ever fall into the QVC, arthritic fingers, elastic jeans trap!
@vanextras: All those tops are actually very cute, and I’d wear any of them! Maybe I should borrow some of you ladies to do some online shopping for me! π
