I am such a planner by nature and it is absolutely killing me to know that my bridesmaids probably won’t expect to buy their dresses for months and months on out…problem is that I want to know the dresses’ exact color so that I can plan around it with the theme of the wedding, flowers, etc….some of my bridesmaids are tight on money so it would be really inconsiderate for me to ask them to purchase a dress so far in advance…when are you all shopping and buying bridesmaids dresses??

We picked out the bridesmaid dresses almost a year before the wedding date, but the girls knew they didn’t have to purchase them until 2 1/2 months before. I would pick them out now and then ask the store how far in advance they need to be ordered. That way your girls will also know how much money they will need to sit aside.

I am a May 2011 bride too. I chose the bridesmaid dresses about 2 weeks ago – with the help of my bridesmaids of course. We chose WTOO plum dresses in crinkle chiffon. THey have 4 dresses to choose from – all of which I love. I am going to wait, however until I find my dress. I’ve looked at 4 different stores so far – and every store has told me that if I get my gown there – all bridesmaid’s dresses would be 10% off. If I can get my girls that extra discount then I’m going to go for it!
I say that if you’ve found the dress (or dresses) that YOU love, then it’s never to early. Just make sure that you are definitely happy with it and the color. I say, if the bridesmaids spend their money now – then they won’t feel a crunch come wedding day when they have to pay for hair, make up, hotel rooms, transportation costs, babysitters, etc, etc. If you are really looking for a deal on bridesmaid dresses, go to Netbride.com. I have a friend who has used them twice, (once for her wedding and then again at her friends wedding) and was totally impressed with them. I asked for a quote on bridesmaid dresses and they are about $50 less than regular price.

Most dresses take 12 weeks to come in, so I think 6-9 months is typical for ordering.
I changed my mind about those dresses so many times, I am very glad we waited. You can pick the color, but I wouldn’t settle on a style just yet.

Are you letting your bridesmaid pick their own dresses or something? I’m a Bridesmaid or Best Man in a wedding coming up, and the bride just said to us “Go to David’s Bridal and pick out a satin, tea-length dress, in the color Apple.” She picked out the color, length, and fabric – we got to pick out the rest. But since she picked out the color already, she doesn’t have to wait on us for any other planning. Can you do something similar?

personally i would wait a little longer. I bought my Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses really early on in planning and then changed my mind on color. I couldn’t return them so i had to fork out for new ones.
You dont want to regret the color/ style.
I would find out how long the dress company needs and then order swatches of the color/s. That way you can plan flowers etc with the exact color and be sure it was what you want.
If you are buying off the rack dresses- just be 100% sure you love them and the color 🙂
