I bought mine only 12 months in advance, but I started looking 18 months in advance and tried on the one I ended up buying during that time.

Pros of going early:

– No rushed decisions.  You can sleep on it and be sure it’s what you want.
– You can afford to try on tons of different styles to see what you like.
– You can scour for deals by going to trunk shows and sample sales at stores

Cons of going early:

– The designer sometimes discontinues certain styles.  If you have your heart set on a dress but decide to wait 4 months before buying, there’s a possibility that dress may no longer be available.  Generally, there is little notice to stores when a design is discontinued.  This was a concern of mine so I called the store every two weeks to check and make sure it was still available lol

– You may end up with “dress regret” where you purchase something so far in advance, then the next season’s design’s have the perfect thing for you or something and you feel sad about your choice.

I think its never too early to look around for your wedding dress….do some research and see what u really like and try them on to see wat style flatter your body figure, and what style matches with your theme

But I would suggest you to set a budget and decide who u want to be your bm first. Then come w/ a theme and color and so on before you girls decide on your wedding dress.

@sarahroby:  I wound up getting my dress about a year in advance (I bought a dress at the first store I went to). I decided to go early because of the time it takes to get gowns in, but I wound up buying a sample so that didn’t really apply.

Dresses take anywhere from 3-6 (sometimes more) months to come in from the designer, so keep that in mind!

Actually, wedding dresses can take anywhere from 6-9 months to get in, depending on the designer. That being said, I don’t think March would be too early to start looking. Sometimes it takes a while to find the one you love anyway! 🙂

Brides dress to be ordered/purchased 6-9 months prior to wedding

Bridemaids Dresses to be ordered/purchased 4-6 months prior to wedding

I picked out my Dress in August 2013 and I ordered it/got measured  January 10th 2014 and my wedding is September 13th, 2014.

You can pick out your dress/bridesmaid dresses now but would definitely try everything on before ordering to avoid dress regret.  I tried on a dress about 2 years in advance, thought it was the “one” and than when I was trying to find it at a better price, a salon’s comments made me change my mind. The store told me they stopped carrying the dress because it was expensive for most brides in the area and the fabric was cheap. I thought long and hard about it, went back out in August 2013 and found the one, tried it on again yesterday and loved it all over again so ordered it. Looking at old pictures I realize I would have regretted the other dress if I had purchased it. Take your time, figure out what you want, try it on a few times and make sure it passes all your tests  (especially sitting) and you’ll know for sure when its the one!

Good Luck!!

I went dress shopping for the first time 2 days ago and found my dress in the first shop I went in! I only tried on 9 dresses altogether and one of them was one I didn’t like but I just tried on because it was white and I wanted to see if I suited white. I put a deposit on a stunning mark Lesley dress. They said it takes 8 months to arrive, so that will be about September time, then we have to do all the alterations and customising so by the time it is all ready it shouldnt be too far off my wedding in feb!

Personally I think you can look on the internet whenever you like. Make a pinterest wedding dress page etc…. But I wouldn’t start trying them on too early, The amount of dress regret posts on here is crazy. I left it 8 months before the wedding, thinking it would be enough time but it was tight. 12 months would have been better, good luck x
