Our venue had us schedule the cake-cutting for right after dinner but many of the weddings I’ve done to have done it after the spotlight dances which seemed to work well as well.

We are doing it right after dinner. We are having a dessert table with pies, cupcakes, donuts, and ice cream in addition to take cake. So guests will help themselves throughout the night, and there is no worries about people being full.

k4yteeee:  I wanted my cake cutting a little later in the evening so that people could digest their food and be ready for cake. Plus I think cake cutting sort of signals the end of the night… Not as in the party is totally over but it’s the last little event that people might feel they need to stick around for. For me, I did it around 9:00 Pm, the happy medium between dinner and the end of the night. (my dinner was at 7, my music ended at 12 midnight) It was also the last thing I needed to keep the photographers for so it was at the end of their shift.

Our photographer and baker both advised us to cut the cake right when we arrived at the venue, so we could take pictures of it right away and more or less check that off our photo list. We had a selection of desserts in addition to the cake so that played a part in it–we wanted our guests to be able to enjoy the desserts but didn’t want that to happen before there were professional pictures near them!
