It depends. Were you planning on using them for the Save the Dates? If so, then you definitely want to do them before that!

However, if you don’t really plan to display them anywhere (aside from your house), then you can get them done whenever. We and several of our friends waited until a few months before the wedding to get them done but we know of people who got them done literally a couple months after getting engaged.

If you are confident in the skills of your photographer, you can definitely wait. I would encourage doing them early if you have some qualms about your photographer and wanted to do this as a “test run”. By doing it early, you still have the opportunity to get a new photographer if the e-session is terrible.

Another reason why some couples (like us) chose to wait was because we were trying to get in shape for the wedding, so it made more sense to wait until we “looked better”.

We used our pics for the Save-The-Date Cards so we did our photos 7 months before the wedding.

I think there is a “right” time to do engagement pictures. Or, if there is it’s “before you send the STDs” IF you plan on using the pics in the Save-The-Date Cards. If you’re having a long engagement, this is one of those things that’s relatively easy to get done early, so you don’t have to worry about coming up with the time/money to do later, imo.

We are date twins!!! I’m getting married the same day.  I had a photographer booked and we were supposed to be doing our engagement photos tomorrow actually… so pretty early.  But unfortunately that won’t be happening now  (issues I won’t get into, but we are finding a new photographer).

I wondered if I was being over eager and if we were doing them too early.  But while reading one of many wedding websites (because I’m relatively newly engaged and that’s all I do!)  I read an article that explained that engagement pictures are to celebrate your ENGAGEMENT!!!  Do them earlier rather than later… we are engaged NOW, why wait til closer to the wedding when you’re about to have wedding pictures done? What’s the point?

Use them for save the dates, a guest book if you want!  If you go on shutterfly.com you can make your own album out of them or your own guest book and you can make a calendar if you want!  I was going to use ours to make a 2013 calendar… but that’s definitely not happening now! lol

good luck!!

we took ours yesterday. man im glad thats over! we have been engaged 8 months and still have exactly 1 year to go, so i dont think a year out is too soon.

i wouldve been fine waiting another few months except that in a few months it will be the dead of winter and because we r having a destination wedding on a tropical island, i didnt want our engagement photos to be of us in sweaters and scarves.

so u might think about what u want ur photos to convey in relation to the theme or feel of the wedding u want. even tho it does not have to “match” by any means. when it becomes the turn of the seasons, that will dramatically affect the tone of ur e-pics. so i think u would be fine to wait til spring if u wanted, or u could do them now, or just whenever.

I am getting married in 2014 as well and thought over this exact question..

We got our official professional pics done last weekend because we got engaged on October 5… I felt like I wanted pictures done at the time we got engaged.

However, I want summer ones for the Save-The-Date Cards and the invitations.. that will match the time of our wedding better. I have a friend who will do them for much cheaper, and we will only need a few for that purpose, so we are going to do epics again in the summer, a year before the wedding

We are getting married next October and doing our engagement pictures in December. We decided it was important for us to document that we were living in Chicago when we were engaged and want to get some cool skyline shots, annnd we think some snowy winter in the city pictures would be great. Also, holiday gifts, say whaaat?

We did ours back in April.  My Fiance works on the road so I wanted to make sure I got them done before he left for who knows how long!  I can have someone go cake tasting with me – but I can’t have someone stand in his place in our pics.

Have fun!!   🙂

As a photographer, I encourage all of my clients to get their engagement pictures done whenever they want! There is no “right” time. The idea of engagement pictures is to celebrate/photograph the time in your life when you became engaged. I would say, however, that if you’re wanting to use your EPs for Save-The-Date Cards, I’d wait until closer to your wedding–you don’t want your look to be drastically different in your Save-The-Date Cards than it is at your wedding. (hair color, etc.) and your look can change a LOT in two years!

I’m getting married next September, and had my e-pics done the beginning of this month. We are using them for Save the Dates and it takes 2 months or so to get all of the pictures back from the photographer, so by time we get them we can start creating the Save-The-Date Cards.
