I’ve only been off BCP for about 2 weeks and I used to have a 28 day cycle pre pill. When I stopped taking the pill I did a quick online “when am I ovulating” quiz and it said today 9/10 and I DEFINITELY feel like I am ovulating today (yay!) so when should we have sex? Should we have done it last night? (we didn’t) we did have sex last Friday and Saturday nights. I plan to jump on Darling Husband when he gets home from work tonight but I’m kicking myself for not doing it last night! Should we also do it tomorrow? Ahhh I’m so new at this!

@Ballet513: Sperm can live up to five days, I think, but most sources recommend having sex one to two days before ovulation. You can also have sex on the day you ovulate. The egg doesn’t live very long, so you’re usually out of luck if you miss ovulation by even a day.
Since you’re coming off BCP, you don’t actually know what your cycle is going to be like. The 28-day cycle on the pill is medically induced. You might ovulate today, but you might not ovulate for weeks. Some people regulate right away, and some take months. Those fertility planning sites aren’t very helpful until you have a couple of months of good data in there. Until then, it’s just estimating ovulation and stuff on the “typical” 28-day cycle. You should read Taking Charge of Your Fertility for more info. I found it to be really helpful.

@twofortheshow: Thanks, I have read that book already and it was very helpful! I didn’t expect that ovulation calculator to be accurate but if what I am feeling right now in my body isn’t ovulation than I have a serious problem! lol I have a lot of pressure/pain etc in that area. I described it to my sister and its definitely what she feels when she ovulates. Just to be sure I peed on an OPK and I got my smiley! So my question isn’t IF I am ovulating it is when should we have sex and are we out for this month bc we didn’t do it yesterday?

It couldn’t hurt to do it tonight!
We had sex only once during my last fertile window and I thought I had ovulated earlier that day so I figured it was highly unlikely that I’d get knocked up but I’m 5 weeks along.

Sorry, I thought you weren’t sure of your day of ovulation. That would affect the answer to your question. If you got a positive OPK today, then you should be good to go. Even if you’ve already ovulated today, the egg should still live for 12-24 hours, I think. Like I said earlier, most sources recommend having sex during the two days before ovulation and on the day of ovulation, so if you’re ovulating today, then go for it!

@Ballet513: Yes, you are supposed to BD before the egg is released. You can BD after you ovulate (today) as the ovum is alive for 12-24 hours after it’s released, but definitely do it ASAP – the clock is ticking! But like twofortheshow said, your cycle could not have regulated right away. Some women regulate RIGHT away and other take several weeks or months.
ETA: Just saw your update. Yes, get your BD on! You usually release an egg 1-2 days after your smiley
