I would start dress shopping right away! I’m getting married a month before you and have been searching for a few months. I’m pretty indecisive, so it’s hard decision to make.

Plus, I was told if I want a hallow-to-hem (custom) measurement, I have to order at least 10 months in advance!

I would start looking around right away and trying them on so you have an idea of what you want. Plus it gives you options and you can still see what is out there (new styles prior to buying).

As to when the gown comes in depends on the designer and when you order. For example I ordered my Maggie Sottero gown online through a bridal shop (out of my state) and Maggie Needs 5 months or so to make gown, then ships it from CHINA to bridal shop (to inspect), then they turn around and shipped it to me. I ordered in May (near the end) and got it 11/26/12!

Keep in mind you also need to allow 3 months or so for alterations incase anything goes wrong as well. So I do say about 9 months in advance or MORE.

I went shopping the first week in October (and found my dress!!) and the store said that it would take between 6-8 months for it to come in.  (They told me that the designer of my dress is usually closer to 6 months – thankfully.  But one of the other designers they carry takes a full 8 months.)

So, I’d say the sooner the better.  That way you are sure to have enough time to not feel rushed making your decision and not be down to the wire for it to arrive.

I’m getting married in September and I just bought my dress last week. The lady at the store told me some dresses take up to 9 months to come in and then you have to factor in alterations and whatnot so I would start shopping soon!

@ILoveMyKorat:  I posted something similar recently.  It makes me feel better to see that someone else is getting married around the same time (we’re planning a November 2013 wedding) and also hasn’t started dress shopping!  Smile

No harm in starting to look and try-on now to find exactly what you want. 🙂 Best of luck to you!

@ILoveMyKorat:  I’m sorry to hear that.  Frown I really hope she’s able to just enjoy the experience and let it be all about you and what you want.  (I do think it’s great that you still really want to include her in the dress experience, though!)

I’m actually waiting to buy because I really want my mom to be there … She lives 1000+ miles from my fiance and I.  Based on some advice I got on the Bee (this place really is awesome!), I’m planning to go shopping alone first just to try on some different shapes/styles and get an idea of what looks best … Then I can make my final selection when my mom visits (which should be in January or February).

Do you think your friends will be helpful?  The reason I ask (and the reason I’m thinking of going alone) is because I feel like my friends in the area will either not really be that into it or will just say things like “Everything looks amazing on you!”  If I go alone I feel like I can take my time with each option and really consider what I think.  If I’m feeling brave, I may take some pictures to share on the Bee to get some additional, unbiased opinions!  (Something you can always do as well!)

Good luck with your dress shopping!  I really do hope you’re able to enjoy it regardless of anything your mom may say/do.  Smile
