My dress came in last July. It fits perfectly except needing a hem (it’s like 6″ too long), which my grandma is going to do. I called the shop and they said that I can pick it up whenever I want (no thoughts on when would be a good time before the wedding, though), but I’m stuck with it after that–they won’t hold it. Now, their site says that they’ll store it for free until the wedding with a free steaming before the day, so I guess that doesn’t make sense to me. They do not have in house alterations–they have a lady that sometimes works through their shop (according to the phone call I made last week)–so it’s not like they’re trying to force me to use their alterations.
Anyway. When should I pick it up? I want to have it so that I can test my accessories (otherwise I’d have to make appointments to go to the shop and try it on), although Fiance thinks he’ll peek, so he wants to take it to my grandma’s.

I would just pick it up. You know you are planning to have your grandma alter it and not them. Generally stores keep them for you if you are planning to alter them there etc… but unless you can take it to your grandmas and bring it back after alteration and then they will hold it, I would just take it now.
You can always go and try it on at her place as many times as you like.

@vorpalette: Sounds like they’re trying to get you to use their in-house alterations person that you mention, I’d go pick it up because you have other plans.

Before you pick it up, I’d ask if they’d still steam it before the wedding (even after you’ve picked it up). That is a service I’d still like to take advantage of.

Can you pick it up, have it altered and use it to pick your accessories, and then take it back for the free steaming just before the wedding? I don’t see why they wouldn’t agree to that. I wouldn’t get it steamed now, it’s just going to get crumped again after alterations and being handled before the wedding.
I would be so antsy if I were you – I think I would want my dress hanging in my closet straight away!

@Lulume: @mchitt329: That’s the thing: they don’t HAVE in-house alterations, like I said. They gave me a sheet with three local seamstresses that they recommend, but who do not work for them, when I bought my dress, and explicitly said that they don’t have alterations there.
@yippee62913: Yeah, I think I’ll just go in there this weekend (the guy on the phone didn’t really sound like he knew what he was talking about) and ask about this, and ask why their site says that they’ll store my dress up to the wedding day for free, when I was told that once I take it, I have to keep it. That doesn’t make sense to me.

@mchitt329: I don’t know what to call her either, as I didn’t understand what the guy was talking about since they told me that they don’t have in-house alterations. The way I took it was that this lady sometimes does her work in their shop, but they don’t make money off of her because they do not employ her.

@vorpalette: Ok, I think i get it now.
My store does the same thing though. The place I bought my dress at said that they don’t do alterations on site but have a seamstress that they deal with and once my dress arrives they will call me to come in for a fitting and then they will give me her information. I’ll have to contact her myself and schdule an app with her at the store.
That is where all my meetings with her will be. I am not sure if she will be altering the dress in that store or will take it with her. But They will pretty much hold my dress and prep it befor ethe wedding (steaming etc..)
I think it’s a insurance/security thing….. My dress was 1700 (with all taxes) and i think they do that so that if there are any problems with the dress, they don’t get blamed for it…. it’s always in their care and you pick it up a day before. Also part of their service. Which I really lilke because I really didn’t want to have to store my dress at home.
