Start reading wedding magazines and websites like wedding bee now.  Gather a folder of ideas and start executing them closer to the wedding.

Part of the fun is figuring out what you want.  But you have 4 years until your wedding, so your taste will change between now and the wedding.

You probably also want to wait to decide on your wedding party until closer to your wedding.

We had a long engagement too.  I waited until about a year before the wedding to really start planning anything.

I would definitely recommend holding off on bridesmaids, guestlist, etc. until much closer to the wedding. Even with our 16-month engagement, there were guestlist issues where I sent save the dates to people I later lost touch with.

But the good news is that you can enjoy all the fun parts! subscribe to magazines, and start thinking about your venue, and what you want your ceremony to be like.

It’s also neat that trends will likely change a bit by 2014. It’d be neat for you to track the things you like now vs. the things you like 2 years closer to the date.

Congrats, and enjoy!

I got engaged this past december, and due to school am also waiting till 2014. Have you thought about a possible wedding date or even a season you would like?

Don’t start planning now, just enjoy your engagement.  Fashion changes, venues close, other vendors close their businesses and so much can happen in that time frame.  You don’t want to buy and plan a bunch of stuff just to not like it four years later.  Enjoy your engagement!

Congrats!  I have to say that I wouldn’t start doing anything aside from fun research, until at least a year and a half out.  Trends and styles change so much from year to year.  So I’d look around, get an idea of some of the stuff I like, as I see it.  Then revisit it when you’re closer to the wedding.  I will have had a 1.5 year engagement, and I bought a few things in the beginning that even now I wish I hadn’t jumped the gun.

Congratulations!! Me and my highschool sweetheart got engaged in January and are looking to get married in September of 2012, after we graduate.  I know its so hard not to plan but as others have already said, your tastes will change, trends will change, vendors will change. Just have fun with with being engaged but don’t feel foolish for looking.  That’s your right as an engaged lady! I would say don’t book anything earlier than 2 years.  That seems like a long time but depending on your venue, some of them (especially in prime time wedding season and on Saturdays) are booked that far in advance.  The most important thing though is have fun!  Congrats again!
