@LWA:  I’m actually curious about this, too!  My Fiance and I aren’t getting married until March 2013…I’m going to assume we should register by the time we send our Save-The-Date Cards since the address to our wedding website will be on the STD card, and the wedding website will have registry info on it.  I’m guessing the registry should be done before you plan/forsee any engagement parties, bridal showers, etc.

There is no point in registering a year early. The inventory changes with the seasons and most of the stuff you choose the store will not have by next year. Personally, I registered just before I sent out invitations. I would say 3 months before the wedding is reasonable, though.

I registered this week (8 months before wedding) because I just sent out save-the-dates with a link to our wedding website that has registry links on it. I’ll need to keep an eye on the registries to make sure nothing is discontinued, but it was something I wanted to get crossed off my list early. I would say any more than 9 months before would be excessive though.

We registered about a year in advance, maybe last May or June. I don’t think it’s too early. The only downside I’ve found- we’ve actually bought/been gifted for reasons besides the wedding quite a bit of the stuff we’ve registered for… so now I have to go and delete those things and add more since we didn’t have a lot on there to begin with. A small annoyance. But you can register whenever you want- I’ve only come across one item that is no longer in stock 🙂

You should have a small registry ready before anyone starts buying you anything.  If you’re having a shower or engagement party 6-12 months before the wedding, you should at least have a few items on your registry.  You don’t need to do your major registry creating until about 3 months before the wedding.  The earlier you do it, the more you’ll have to keep an eye on it for changes in inventory.

I say four or five months tops. Give people a break. Save the dates are about enduring they. Can plan ahead and make it to your wedding. Mostly due to travel. Register prior to your invites. Put the info on your website then. If someone wants to know prior to that they’ll ask you ar family or friends.
