This is a good question! If we were having an engagement party, I would say to register for a few things before that. A lot of it depends on where you want to register. If the place turns over their merchandise often, you may want to wait. FI’s brother and SIL registered at Target about 8-10 months before their wedding and many of their things were unavailable.

Our goal is to start registering in January. That will give us about six months. Thinking ahead, we probably won’t have our first shower until April or May. We’re thinking about Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, and maybe one more place. Fiance wanted to register at seven different places. We had to talk :-).

@HappilyEverAfter54: Oh yes…seven places. His thought was that we should give people variety in terms of different stores. I explained that etiquette says that normally 2-3 stores is sufficient. Plus, I don’t think he realizes how long this is going to take! What makes it even more fun is that we currently live five hours apart, so we will have to accomplish this task in a weekend. I’m already laughing at this prospect :-).

We aren’t doing an engagement party, either. It just wasn’t a practical choice for us.

I think that you can cover nearly everything with BBB and Target/Wal-Mart. I’m thinking we may do some preliminary browsing online and go from there.

I’m July 2012. The biggest problem with registries is that if you do them too soon, things go out of stock or change bar code numbers and then people cant find what you wanted on your registry. Wait until a month before your invites go out – that’s lots of time!

We’ve registered already but that is mainly because we’re having an engagement party (I gather this is more of a thing in NZ) and from my friends’ experience, people already expect you to be registered or give them ideas of places you would like gift cards from! A lot of the things we registered for were pretty standard items and unlikely to go out of stock and we’re also prepared to go in and reselect if we have to. We’ve registered at Briscoes (a housewares retail chain of stores in NZ) and Amazon.com.

I agree with the previous posters though, a couple of months in front of your first “gifting event” – engagement party, bridal shower or wedding – would be plenty of time.

Wait until next year at LEAST. I started mine in May for my August wedding and everyday I have to go babysit my Macy’s registry because they keep discontinuing stuff or removing it from being able to be purchased online, and that is only a 3 month time span!

Hmmm..we are going to look at stuff tomorrow.  I wonder if that’s bad now.  :/  I’m 99% sure the stuff we chose will still be there.  I just like to get stuff done early! lol.  Anyone had experiences registering this early?

I did mine already. You do have to go in periodically and update/change things that are no longer in stock, but you have to do that even if you start it later. One less thing out of the way!

I’m an April bride, but I wanted to let you know that if you get the itch to register early Bed Bath and Beyond was pretty helpful. They told us which items were likely to still be around and the lady wants me to come in around 5 months before the wedding to sit down and go over the list together. She will show me what’s been discontinued and help replace those items. If you go with somewhere like Target I would wait until after January. I think that’s their first major roll over after the holiday season.

We are going to wait until February or March at the EARLIEST — our shower will probably be in April or May so we’ll probably wait until about a month or so before that to avoid the problems of stock changes etc. We want to register at Target and they turn over stock what seems like every other week, so I definitely want to wait until the last minute to register there.
