I’ve heard anywhere between 6 months and when you get your BFP.

I’d split the difference and go for 3 momths.

just a hint – maybe wait a month or so later than Jan to start. September is a midwives busiest time lol

You need the folate to help prevent spinal bfida and other spine disorders.  Just start taking them now.  It doesn’t hurt to start early.

Now. My OB recommended I take them during my child bearing years whether we’re trying or not, so I never stopped taking them. Now we’ll be TTC in a couple months and i’ve just been on them straight for the last few years. Doesn’t hurt.

At least three months ahead of time, but earlier wouldn’t hurt.  The folate is critical in the first few weeks of pregnancy to prevent some nasty birth defects.  It takes a while to build up in your system, so if you get knocked up right away like some of us, you want to have started a few months back!

Earlier doesn’t hurt. But FWIW, I didn’t start taking them until I found out I was pregnant (and was already 7 weeks along), but my OB just told me to start taking them at that point and that my diet most likely had sufficient folate so not to worry. Naturally, I worried like crazy, so even though LO is perfectly healthy, I definitely wouldn’t recommend finding yourself in my situation haha.

I’d just start taking them now. My OB said at least 3 months before trying. We aren’t TTC yet, but I take them everyday just in case an “oops” happens. I just replaced my regular multivitamin. My doctor said it’s fine.

It Starts With the Egg says 6 months before TTC.

Interestingly enough, a friend of mine who gets terrible kidney stones started testing out prenatals as her first step toward getting ready to maybe TTC (to find a brand that wouldn’t give her stones) and told me about the brand she’s using that she SWORE prevents hangovers.

I grabbed a bottle at Whole Foods and I haven’t had a single hangover since i started taking them like 3 weeks ago – and there has been a LOT of wedding drinking and celebrating this month.

The brand is Smarty Pants, they have really good ingredients – everything is bioavailable. And there’s a code for 30% off – so I ordered 5 bottles of the prenatals for myself and 3 bottles of their men’s gummies for hubby.

I plan to keep taking them right up to when we start TTC, 7 months from now.

Another vote for 3 months! I was actually still on my IUD when I started prenatals. I was on my fourth month of taking prenatals when we started our first cycle of TTC.

duchessgummybunns :  What’s the code?? I was looking at those since they have methylfolate vs folic acid.

savealife :  I don’t know if it’s still active, but I used: SmartyParty30

They are a very high quality prenatal!
