summerrain123 :  I am not sure that it will ever just kick in unless it’s in a panic because the wedding is close, and generally at that point, it’s too late.

My wedding is in November of 2018, and I’d like to lose 50-80 pounds by then. I could reach that goal by this September or January through small exercise and calorie counting/macros. I’ve been dieting since I got engaged two and a half weeks ago. I have an eating disorder, so I am expecting mishaps and hitches in the journey, so I am giving myself time to learn to eat healthily and to keep myself from dieting unhealthily.

I’d suggest that if your goal is health, then you start now. Join something my fitness pal, which somewhat tracks your exercise and calorie intake and allows you to adjust your goals for your plans. You have time to lose the weight, but it’s worth it to sort of dive into it now so it becomes routine and not a stress filled panic.

I’m not going to tell you not to lose weight, because that is obviously your decision and you should do what makes you happy. But I don’t think its necessarily healthy to try and hit a goal weight by a certain date, because our bodies are going to do whatever they want. That being said; make small changes. You can either increase activity or decrease caloric intake. Find healthy alternatives to foods you love. Cut out alcohol, soda, and other drinks. Opt for water, black tea and black coffee.

The motivation never hit me. I was at my heaviest on our wedding day.

Now I’m losing weight because we are going to TTC next year, turns out that was the motivation I needed! This is the most successful I’ve ever been and the longest I’ve ever stuck with a diet/exercise plan.

It never hit me for my wedding (my weight had never really flucuated then and I was ok with the shape I was in), but since starting fertility treatments 3 years ago, I’ve put on about 10 lbs and it literally hit me 2 weeks ago.  It’d been bothering me, but I always had an excuse – I’m about to start another round of IVF so I’ll have to stop working out anyways and lose all my progress, this might work so I’m gonna gain weight when I’m pregnant anwyays, I’m too tired, I’m too hungry… any excuse.  But like a light switch, I decided I’ll work out whenever I can, stop if I have to then start from scratch again if needed and start watching what I eat again with my fitnesspal.  That very day I set up a spare bedroom as my gym and workout 60-90 minutes everyday.  I’m not sure what caused the sudden flip, but I think it’s just completely internal and a conscience decision you have to make to just do it.

I know that I SHOULD lose 10lbs or so, but for some bizarre reason I have less motivation than ever right now haha. I actually specifically chose my wedding dress because I wouldn’t need to lose weight to look good in it. I work out a lot regularly, but I love going out for dinner and drinks and just can’t seem to care enough to stop. I’m a healthy weight and in shape, just not at my ideal weight..

When I AM feeling more motivated, the best/easiest way for me to lose is sticking to the calories in/calories out mentality.. I use a fitbit watch to motivate myself to move more and track calories burned, and then count the calories I eat. I find that the *reward* of the number of steps, and the number of calories burned help to motivate me more strictly each day. Losing weight healthily is so slow that sometimes it can be discouraging in the moment when you’re working hard, but not seeing any PROOF of your effort.

For me personally, my motivation was knowing that my dress fittings were coming up so I had to become strict with my diet/exercise as I ordered my dress one size smaller on purpose (totally not a great plan in retrospect).

Overall the diet was easy enough to control (prep/pre-make meals at the weekends, not have junkfood in the house, eat loads of protein and veg to feel full). But once I added high intensity bootcamp sessions 4x week, this kept up my motivation. I was getting stronger and more toned but I also quickly realized that the junkfood I was craving was totally not worth the hour of hell I would have to put myself through to burn it off! So these tough sessions killed my cravings.
