Someone recently tagged me in something kind of awkward on Facebook. It was a joke that had to do with having so much student loan debt that your best way out of it is death. (Ha, ha?)
I can see where the assumption comes from because I am definitely over-educated, lol. But through a combination of factors, I’ve managed not to owe any money for my degrees. I realize how incredibly fortunate that makes me these days. I’ve also never discussed it with anyone (because why would I?). So there are several times over the years that I’ve been on the receiving end of assumptions about how much student loan debt I must have. It always makes me a little uncomfortable. When this happens in conversations, I just go for a lighthearted change of subject. But what to do when it happens publicly on social media? Untag? Hide post? Do nothing and shift awkwardly in chair? (<– my current plan)
Anyway, my example is seriously not a big deal, but it got me wanting to hear others’ awkward foot-in-mouth stories. Has anyone ever made a totally awkward assumption about you? (Or have you ever made a totally awkward assumption about someone else?) What happened? How did you deal? Tell me all about it!
