Kir32:  That’s what I was getting at. I read an article where someone said they should change their name so no one would associate them and I’m like, who’s gonna mix up  terrorism with pharmaceuticals?

nestle:  Ah ok. You said “true or not” so I thought you meant you weren’t sure if the money was going to ISIS or not. Sorry 🙂

I feel like a working knowledge of Google would solve the problem of so many Weddingbee threads that end up off-topic.

BWLE: Well, I was being a bit facetious, since I don’t think it is really possible for the bee to avoid hearing about ISIS eventually. If it were possible for her to stay in ignorant bliss, I wouldn’t be totally against it.  In graduate school, one of my areas of study was Cambodia and the atrocities committed by Pol Pot and company, a holocaust that not enough people know about. I also studied the purges committed by Stalin (who killed even more people than Hitler) and the mass starvation that followed by the famine his policies created in the Urkraine. Again, events not enough people know about.

So, I am well aware how important it is that these horrible events be brought to light. I also have run into numerous people who do not know about or care to find out about what is going on in other parts of the world. I used to get upset and lecture people who did not vote, and then I decided, why not just be GLAD they do not vote because why would I want people like that making important decisions. Just be glad they stay home and leave the voting to the better informed. I have zero chance of changing them into a different person.

I also know the emotional toll it took on me to be a news junkie and think I could change every horrible circumstance in the world. I finally gave myself permission to back away from the news for my own mental health. The bee has since updated that, with an anxiety disorder, she has trouble handling the news. You can scoff at that if you want, but I believe her, as I started a thread recently just about the strong emotional reaction I was having to the ISIS murders. I even had a very vivid nightmare about this situation. If you don’t have this type of vivid imagination or emotional reaction, it is easy to feel smug and superior about listening more to the news.

Given my own emotional struggles with this, I simply responded with the first thought that came into my head, that it must be nice not to know. You can turn that into a philosophical discussion if you want, but it is comments like your that sometimes make me feel like this site is a waste of time.

Incidently, during the four months between my engagement and my wedding, I stopped caring almost entirely about world events. I was on Cloud 9. As far as I know, the world kept turning, and the State Department never once called to get my recommendations on foreign policy.

Carolsays:  and that is why the Bee is hard. I understand your personal position based on the above, but that’s not what you originally stated, it  was a blanket statement of it’s easier not to know which as I said I find appaling. I’m glad to hear you are well versed on what’s going on in the world as unfortunately many ladies aren’t and I think we can agree on how sad that is. Without knowing your back ground it’s easy to take your comment at fave value of one of ignorance.

While I agree that she does not have to know every little detail about what’s going on in all worldy aspects, I myself don’t either, and that the world will indeed not stop spinning if she doesn’t read up on Isis, the feminist in me can’t help but think that everyone should have a general knowledge of the basic issues happening in the world, especially women. It sets us back 50 years to sit here and act like ditz’s who don’t have time for world politics because we have a wedding to plan (not saying. That is what she was doing, just in general). I get it I do I have anxiety too and it’s hard to read all the negativity in the world, like I said I just think a general working knowledge is super important, This was a pretty big one to be unaware of.

axia08:  What? I think you took my comment WAAAAY. Out of context. She was saying that since we BOTH don’t know about this terrorist group that maybe WE should get our heads out of the wedding fog. And I was joking that I LIKE my wedding fog. But as a social commentary that maybe I HAVE been too wedding consumed by things we get caught up in as important when there are truly important things out there that I’ve  missed. When you realize the extent of the horrors of this group going on in the world spending so much time looking at what amounts to little more than fluff in the grand scope of the world seems rediculous. And yet it brings us a lot of joy and we love our pink wedding cloud with so much pain in the world.

Sorry if my comment was a little too… cleverly subtle, for you?

KapOct18:  girl I totally understood you! That’s why my comment was so BLATANTLY tonge in cheek. Which it seems like not quite everyone caught on to…

Yes there are horrors in this world, but no, I’m not going to spend every moment reaserching every terrorist group in existence. It doesn’t make me uneducated. It just means I probably spent my time learning about something else…. Like how to DIY silk flower petal aisle runners *giggle*.

KapOct18:  Ha! I had no idea. I just picked that because rustic theme is HUGE right now so I figured everyone would “get the reference”. you know, lace and mason jars etc. it wasnt meant as an actual judgement on anyone’s wedding. Just a reference point that we probably all have some knowledge of since this IS a wedding website. *facepalm*. Sorry sweety. That’s what I get for trying to be clever after a 10 hour graveyard shift, lol.

My mums side is German and she had an Uncle called Adolf. Seriously and when my Gran met her british soldior husband they came to live in the UK. The uncle aparantly had such a hard time trying to set up a life in the UK right after WW2 being German and having the name Adolf. He eventually changed it to Wolfgang. I very popular German name.

Being imediatly associtated with such horror must be tough. Very over dramatic/selfish on other people part. I mena if I met a young woman called Myra, I wouldnt make the Myra Hindley connection. A name does not make a person. If it really upsets you, you consider changing it? I personaly think it’s a stunning name though 🙂 x

Isn’t Isis originally name of Egyptian goddress? Anyone assiciating your name with Islamic State isn’t worth dealing with. I.S.I.S. is an abbreviation for something entirely diffrent from Isis. Nothing we can do about ignorant ppl.

Sporty-Bee:  OH I LOVE your name!!!!! Seriously I have really wanted that to name a future daughter!

I was really annoyed when they called that terrorist organisation ISIS – though I noticed they have often referred to it as IS instead…

I guess there is nothing you can do- try not to let it bother you- it is a really lovely name!!!

xx
