I’m not a huge makeup person, so I’m struggling a bit with this. I’d do my own… except that I’m a bit nervous about the stress leading to breakouts and I sort of want to have someone on hand who has all the makeup tools that I might need in case I need to cover anything up haha. So I’m almost looking more for someone who is well stocked… rather than someone who is “good at makeup.” Any thoughts on where to find this sort of person? Thanks!

I googled makeup/wedding in my city. I also would go to makeup counter at some of the stores and if you see a makeup artist you like ask them if they freelance. I also interviewed a person at my hair salon. But I end up going with a girl that does this for special events/weddings because she is used to traveling to the location and had a great extensive makeup for everyone. As I have white and black people in my wedding party. I looked through portfolio and saw that she had done all skin tones.

I plan on having someone from MAC do the makeup for the entire wedding party. I will have two to three makeup artist because I dont want anyone to not look their best. We are also hiring someone to help the men get ready even though they are wearing uniforms.

I googled around a lot in the location where the wedding is, and then I also asked some of my other “in touch” vendors. My videographer is the one that recommended a salon! It was great because I could see their work in one of her videos, and their website had been kind of poor before so I hadn’t been looking at them.
Turns out we did a trade – I revamped their website for them, they’re doing hair and makeup for my whole bridal party & moms!!! Couldn’t have been better.

I asked my wedding planners like I did for most of my other vendors. Do you know anyone who recently got married that you can ask? Or try a few different makeup counters at a department store and see if you find anyone you like there.

I actually posted a status on facebook that returned a lot of results. One person’s name came up a few times and I saw that she had done the makeup at good friend’s wedding. The makeup looked fantastic, and since she came highly recommended, I booked a trial with her. She was absolutely fantastic and I did a truly amazing job. I tried out one other person at my mom’s request who had been recommended by the secretary at her school. Unfortunately, she didn’t do such a good job, but I was fortunate to find who I did. She regularly does makeup for special events, weddings, etc. so she traveled to the venue, which was important to me. I would really ask recommendations of people you know first, and then check out what local people are available and their reviews/portfolios.

I tried the one my venue recommended (horrible!!), so then I just used wedding wire.

I googled it for the city closest to where we are having our wedding. And she’s willing to travel to my location on the wedding day. Actually just had my trial last weekend and I was very pleased. Facebook is always a good idea too.

If you’re having your hair done, see if the salon has a makeup artist. Mine does, and I know lots of independent (non-chains) ones do, too.

I read reviews on WeddingWire and The Knot. I also asked around at work, because I work with a few girls who’ve been married in the last 5 years. It turns out that all 3 girls hired the same hair stylist/make-up artist, and she had great reviews, so I hired her right away.

@ivoryowl: I found mine thru a recomendation from a few other bees who also got married in St Thomas. I read tons of reviews and found out they were the best of the best so I went with them!
Maybe you could start a thread here on the bee seeking recomendations in your area….it worked for me!

I have lots of friends and friends of friends who recently had weddings, pregnancy photo shoots, or “I’m just that fabulous”/”Just because…” photo shoots so I just asked them who did their make up. So, I guess I selected my make up artist through personal recommendations.
Outside of that person, I also have a couple of friends who are make up artists and work in the beauty pageant and MAC make up industry. So there are plenty of people in my circle, I guess.

I had a reccomendation and also I had make up by them for a wedding I was in. Simply Beautiful in New Jersey.
Loved the trial we did. Here is my look.

Try asking around beauty parlors. The lady who is doing my wedding makeup works with the hairdresser I hired.
