Mine was a coworker’s sister.  Ask around, I’m sure you’ll find lots of people with good realtors.

I agree with @MrsLongcoatPeacoat: , have you tried asking coworkers?

When we first started searching we would call the realtors who had the homes listed. They would show you the house and would always offer to show us more homes. On one of our visits, the house was being sold by a fantastic guy. We really liked him. When he offered we excepted. Doing it this way was kind of like a trial run and we were able to see if we clicked.

We’re currently using a realtor that Fiance used when he bought his first condo (he didn’t end up using her then b/c he bought new but he liked her and thought she’d be good).  However, Fiance being the “ass” he is, replied to an email (thinking he was sending it to me) calling her a twat and saying that he doesn’t mind if we buy with her but he thinks she doesn’t understand our needs/what we’re looking for.  Except HE SENT IT TO HER!! Needless to say, once our contract with her is up, we’ll likely have to find a new realtor, who Fiance will not be allowed to exchange emails with!! 😛

We met our realtor at an Open House that Darling Husband and I were at. I think we were at that Open House for about 45 minutes just talking with her- we totally clicked! And she helped us find “the house” within 2 weeks— offer is accepted and now we’re just waiting for the financing to get approved!

We basically saw houses that people were selling until we found the one we wanted. We went through 3 realtors til we found the one we clicked with.  Our realtor was amazing, we were really lucky to find her

Its funny because as soon as I started telling people that we were buying a house I had so many people telling me: oh my sister is a realtor, or my neighbor sells houses for a living. So that’s what we did, we went with the sister of my FI’s best friend. Its so much better to choose someone that you know will have your best interest. BEWARE of open houses, a lot of realtors tried to suck us in and we were so innocent at first we almost let one, but then we learned lol.

Realtor.com has a find a Realtor function but it doesn’t tell you much.

Go with recommendations and your gut. If you don’t feel comfortable or that the Realtor doesn’t have your best interests in mind then move on.

We actually went to an open house, and spoke with the realtor for that home.  We weren’t too serious at that point, but the guy kept in touch, and wasn’t pushy to get us to check things out, and when we were finally serious he was definitely a great realtor!

Don’t go online looking for one. It’s a hit or miss. My realtor was recommended by my friend because she bought a house through her.

Go through a recommendation if you can.  Our realtor happened to be a friends, but she had found homes for two others friends, so she also came with ghigh recommendations.

We first asked friends if they had any recos, but that didn’t really pan out for us. I went to a ton of open houses and met a lot of realtors that way.  I ultimately picked the one I felt most comfortable with and it worked out well, I just closed last week!
