I have been engaged since early February, however Mr. Maneki Neko and I will be enduring a long engagement.
Here is the situation. We currently live in St. Louis, MO. He is from San Diego, California. We will very likely be moving next year (late spring/early summer) for him to complete an internship in order to complete his PhD. He’s planning on applying a number of places, including his hometown and St. Louis. I’m hoping to have this wedding planned and ready to go just as he finishes his PhD in 2012. The problem is I don’t know where we will be living!
So everyone- where should I get married? I’ve pretty much decided it will A) be in St. Louis (because I KNOW this city well), or B) in whichever city we are living in because planning a wedding long-distance scares the living bejeezus out of me.
Does this sound like a good solution? Unfortunately I’ll have to wait until 2011 to even know where we’re moving. 🙁

I think if you know people can travel and you can travel once or twice to St. Louis you can just go ahead and plan it there. If you know it that well it shouldn’t be too too hard. Otherwise, what time in 2011 will you know? I think it’s doable to plan a wedding in a year if necessary and you could do things right now that don’t revolve around the venue/location (dress, etc) or just come up with ideas you love until then.

Where is your family from? That is the “proper” response. It’s generally expected that the wedding will be near the bride’s family. This matters more if your parents are paying for a significant portion of the wedding.
Second, if the first one doesn’t give a clear solution. Where would most people be coming from? For example, we live on the East coast. His whole family is West Coast. It costs $600-700 for him to fly home. It costs about $200 for me to fly home, or to fly from his hometown to Missouri. Much easier for the bulk of my guests to make it if it’s in Missouri.
There’s another question – have you asked him?
A final deciding point – SD is going to be more expensive that St. Louis.
That said, San Diego is GORGEOUS. I’m a Missouri girl myself, and my guy is from San Franscisco area. Basically as soon as marriage came up, he said he wanted the wedding in my hometown. I’d really want to arrange my wedding in whatever town I was in at the time, personally, but for my guy tradition wins out.

Wherever you want the wedding! I currently live in St Louis but I’m planning a wedding in Charleston SC, its surprisingly easy to plan something long distance. So if you want STL go for it but if you want somewhere else that would work too! good luck reaching a decision!!

I’m going to throw this out there…
Las Vegas 🙂
The days of the cheezy drive through wedding are over – although you can still drive-through. I live in Vegas and am working on my wedding right now.
It’s an easy trip from San Diego, Allegiant flies from the St. Louis area. Room are reasonable, venues are plentiful. And then, no matter where you are, you have a built in vacation! We’ve talked to a lot of vendors in planning our wedding a lot of them are surprised that I’m local.
While it might not be the perfect solution, it might be a fun one 🙂
