    Definitely the second option, IMO.

The gym is a cavern.  It will take a lot to make it feel intimate.

You can do much more with the actual room.

I like the second option a lot better.  The first one reminds me of my middle school dances, to be perfectly honest.  You can do a lot of decorating in a variety of ways (uplighting, chairs, decor, fun tablecloths) in the second one and really glam it up!

Go with the smaller space..unless you are inviting 500 people.

The smaller space wont seem so overwhelming when it comes to decorating and seems more “wedding” than the other which seems appropriate for a school dance. Plus… a Dj service might charge more to set up speakers in the large gym.

I also like the wood floor in the second option… perhaps one side can be the food/eating area and the other can be decorated for the dancing hours.

I would do the 2nd option (the non-gym).  The arch space is really pretty, but you’d still have a gym feel – and, I bet the acoustics would also have that echo-y feel.

No offense, but the gym made me cringe and think of middle school dances. Plus you’ll have to spend so much more on decor to make it seem like you’re not in a gym. I like the 2nd option a lot more because I guess it’s more wedding-y and it’ll be easier to get the kind of wedding feel you want.
