@Mimoza:  I would go w/ # 2 just because I love the picture lol but I would rather be around people my own age on my honey moon and if you want to have a great time and ‘party’ then for sure, go for #1!!

@Mimoza:  Since you say you are 25-26, I would do the Cancun one now and party. You can always do the “older crowd” one for vow renewal or anniversary or something. Both are gorgeous though! I can see your dilemma. πŸ™‚

@Mimoza:  I’ve been to the Excellence Riviera (ERC), and we’re going to Excellence Playa Mujeres (EPM) on honeymoon next year.

My preference would have been to return to the ERC due to the quieter, older crowd, and the location (near a small town called Puerto Morelos which we enjoy visiting). However, I got my way on doing a split stay, and on the first hotel, so, I let OH pick the second, and he preferred the more modern look of EPM.

The main differences between the two are:

EPM is newer and more modern than ERC

The rooms at ERC are laid out differentely to those at EPM; while both are open-plan, the bathroom at EPM is even more open-plan than that at ERC, with the sinks located directly behind the bed; at ERC, there is more space. I do however prefer the sitting area in the rooms at EPM, as the sofa is directly in front of the bed so you can see the TV from both; whereas at ERC the sitting area is separate and kind of awkwardly laid out. The decor of the rooms at ERC is also getting dated, though still very nice

The crowd at EPM is, as you said, younger; but, there are still quiet areas if that’s what you want. ERC is very much an older, quieter crowd, which appeals to me personally; but at night it is VERY quiet, we mainly just went for drinks to the Martini Bar.

The beach at EPM is generally considered better than that at ERC

Location-wise, ERC is better IMPO due to being further down the coast and so nearer to places like Playa del Carmen and Tulum while still being close to the airport; EPM is in the other direction from the airport and the only places nearby are Cancun (approx 25 minutes) and it’s well located for the ferry to Isla Mujeres.

In terms of restaurants and amenities they offer pretty much the same; full menus and details are available on their website.

Having spoken to people who have been to both, they rate them similarly; so I really think it’s quite personal and comes down to what you prefer.

@Mimoza:  I am sorry. I am overdue for a vacation as the brain is fried. For some reason, my brain registered #2 as Cancun hence the young person resort. In that case, my vote is #1 – the one with the young crowd!

@Mimoza:  I have been to Excellence Riviera and our best friends have been to Excellence Playa Mujeres, so based on our experiences here is the difference.

1st while Excellence Riviera Cancun, says “Cancun” it is actually about 45 mins away from Cancun, so that means it is a challenge to go out in Cancun, however, they do have a package at the resort to bar hop to 3-4 different bars in Cancun & they take you out there on a bus. We looked into the cost of a taxi and decided not to go, therefore we stayed at the resort. Yes, the resort does cater to older people, and yes most of these people go to bed by midnight. I will say I LOVED this resort, great resturants, EXCELLENT service waiting on you hand and food, great rooms. But the negatives were the nights were a little boring (they have a disco which is okay, but still a little boring) and the beach has alot of seaweed (not as nice as Cancun.)

The PM resort also has great food, rooms, resturants, great service, good beach, etc. However, there nightlife is kind of “blah” too – my friends said that NOBODY was at the disco, where at least at ERC, people were there, but maybe they were there on an off week. Like us, my friends didn’t leave the resort, so I don’t know how close additional nightlife is, but i think you can get somewhere closer then if you were staying at the other resort, which makes it more appealing to me.

Overall, based on our experience and theirs, my choice would be PM over RC becuse the beach is prettier in PM, and I would gamble on the night life being better.

    @Mimoza:  Glad I could help πŸ™‚

I don’t think you’d be disappointed with either; our favourite things were the selection of restaurants and the fact they don’t require reservations, and the overall feel/decor; they do feel/look very upscale. Other things like 24 hour room service (always prompt and hot and very tasty) and the in-room mini-bar are also nice touches.

Another one I forgot to mention is the other hotel we’e staying at, the Gran Bahia Principe Sian Kaan. We’re getting a penthouse suite which has a private roof-top jacuzzi with loungers. It’s adult’s only, but part of a larger complex; there’s a buffet and two a la cartes on-site and then you can use the restaurants and the disco etc at the sister properties. It isn’t as upscale as the Excellence properties, and you need reservations for the restaurants, however, it is livelier if you head to the main complex; from what I’ve read the disco and sports bar do get busier than at the Excellence.

Just to throw in another option lol πŸ˜‰

    Excellence Riviera Cancun = http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Review-g240327-d499896-Reviews-Excellence_Riviera_Cancun-Puerto_Morelos_Yucatan_Peninsula.html

Strictly with that info in hand, I’d probably choose the first one over the second.

While I was looking at TA, I also found this topic in their Discussion Forum it might give you more insight in your dilemma of choosing:

TripAdvisor – Excellece Riviera Cancun VS Excellence Playa Mujeres = http://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g1229340-i12413-k5365672-Excellence_Riviera_Cancun_Vs_Excellence_Playa_Mujeres-Playa_Mujeres_Cancun_Yucatan_Penins.html

    Hope this helps,

I’d go with the first one as it seems to be calmer and less party oriented πŸ™‚ I’m not really a party person.
