- Wedding: July 2016
My FH and I are really struggling with this. Neither of us can decide where to go! We know that we want certain things: relaxing, able to do nothing if we want to, but have plenty of options to explore when we get bored without being on a timeline, and NOT on a beach. FH also wants to minimize the number of bugs. Ideally I would like a pool, lake, or ocean nearby, just not a tropical beach.
We live by a beach already, and only spend a few hours there before we get bored, so a beach honeymoon is not for us. We live on the West Coast, but our wedding will be on the East Coast, so we were thinking of flying to somewhere in Europe. Ideas we have tossed around are Ireland, Tuscany, and Switzerland/Austria/Germany (the Alps mainly). All have pros and cons and we really can’t decide!
Ireland: We both love Whiskey and Guinness, and think that we would fit in well with locals if we met any while at a Pub. Staying in a castle sounds fun. Neither of us have been there. But there doesn’t seem to be a lot to do in one area, so we would have to create an itinerary and stick to it to see multiple places. FH doesn’t want that.
Tuscany: Close enough for day trips by train to some of the major cities, and also day trips to wineries. Amazing food options, and medieval towns to walk around. Relaxing stay in a villa/hotel with a pool and spa (or spas nearby). FH can speak a little Italian, and would probably learn more before we went. But FH has already been to Italy (though not Tuscany), and says he doesn’t trust Italians in cities after running into pickpockets and such. We also live near a wine region and have taken trips to Sonoma/Napa before. Truffles also seem to be a very popular delicacy, and I have a mushroom allergy.
Switzerland/Austria/Germany/Alps: Food goes along with our new diet (keto…this area has awesome sausages and cheeses), but awesome beer options that we would break the diet for. Could take day trips to different areas by car or train fairly easily. Neither of us have ever been. But we aren’t really sure what to do here apart from eat, drink beer, and travel to different cities.
We have a ton of airline miles and hotel points (we can literally pay for 7-10 nights plus airfare solely on those), so we can pretty much go anywhere. HELP!
