I think any black handbag that fits a folder would be fine.  Briefcases are very bulky.

A portfolio with a handle might work well for what you’re looking for.  Places like office depot and staples carry both.  University bookstores also usually have things like that, but you’re a bit limited if you don’t want their logo on it.

When I need to hold papers and a computer I use a satchel like this. Not too stuffy like a guy’s briefcase but not a tote either.

I second the idea to go with a portfolio rather than briefcase. It less bulky and atill looks very professional.  You can get them at any office supply store or online

For interviews I take a briefcase on wheels that I found for a great price at Burlington’s Coat Factory.  It’s shiny patent leather so it looks feminine but still looks professional.  Trust me the wheels help when you are in high heels and still carrying a purse on the opposite shoulder.

i often found nice feminine briefcases at luggage stores.  ones like these often come with a shoulder strap too, that’s what i liked about them.
