I’ve been searching for a new dress to wear for our 10 yr dating anniversary but I’ve had a lot of trouble – either dresses fit my body but not my chest (too big) or the material was too cheap or something like that.
Where do you find nice dresses (for example for your bachelorette or rehearsal dinner or to wear to a wedding as a guest?)
I prefer the satin type fabrics since they camoflauge (aren’t skin tight) and instantly look more polished. I’m tired of looking at everything from ASOS to Neiman (I never usually shop this “Fancy”) and still getting strange fabrics.
Here is a picture of what I mean by satin type – I can post others if you need more examples.
Other fabrics are ok too, I’ve just had so much trouble with fit. I bought a cotton maxi lately that fit and looked great but that is more casual.

Macy’s, Nordstroms, and Banana Republic
If you generally struggle to find dresses that fit, you may simply not have the figure for ready-to-wear clothes and may need to bite the big alterations bullet.

I’m not sure if there’s one in your area, but I always find really cute stuff at the Neiman Marcus Outlet (the normal store would obviously be good too, if it’s in your budget). I also like BCBG.

They have some nice ones out at Express right now. They’re more on the casual side of cocktail, but are nice. (they also have a crap ton of spring fun dresses) I got a nice blue/black/white color blocked dress that’s made out of a nice airy material.
Also look at White House Black Market. they normally have a good selection of dresses. http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=24&pageId=1&productId=570063982&viewAll=true&prd=Strapless+Embroidered+DropWaist+Dress&subCatId=cat90006&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=14&catId=cat210002&cat=Dresses++Skirts+Occasion+Dresses&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=1&size=’ defer=’defer

Le Chateau is my favorite dress store ever. I think it might just be a Canadian thing though.

Thank you girls! Does anyone know what the satin material is called? I usually look at the fabric online – would it be polyester or some blend?
Also, I prefer dresses with at least one strap – the girls are usually too big for strapless to be comfy – does anyone have any links to specific dresses in that material which may work? I like all colors except taupe/grey.

I second Macys – I always have good luck with them for dresses. Also, try Bebe.

I think the mall department stores are your best bet. Macys and Nordstroms always has a ton of satin dresses. You can search online on their websites for cocktail dress or evening dress.

The last few cocktail dresses I got were Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Dillard’s. I like ModCloth and Anthropologie but they sometimes aren’t fancy enough, and being online means half of the time they don’t fit 😛 One of the Dillard’s near me adn the Nordstrom have alterations people on staff, so that’s helpful. Macy’s just had a sale, so I bought a dress today. Depending on how fancy you want, you may also check out stores like the Limited and Express.
