I use Kayak, they’ll search a bunch of sites for you. Then I often double check on the specific airline’s site. Sometimes they’ll be a couple dollars less than what the other sites find.

Airfare is almost ALWAYS cheapest direct from the airline.

It’s all about when you are flying and when you purchase. I have usually found a 2 month prior window is a safe time to get very reasonable airfare for a specific travel date.

And being flexible about what airport you fly into/from. A airport 40 minutes away might save you $$$.

And all rules go out the window during holiday time.

I like fly.com

I’ve heard good things about kayak, but haven’t used it

I use kayak as well. I also check southwest’s site because they don’t advertise their airfare on any of the discount sites.

I second Kayak. Also, be sure to factor in the cost of parking and gas (knowing your car’s actual miles per gallon is helpful!) to drive to another airport. My local airport has free parking, so even though the flights are more expensive, it often ends up costing more in all to drive to another airport and pay for gas and parking, just to get on a cheaper flight.

@Anewmommatobe:

Did you follow all the way through as if you were to book it? Before entering cc info?

Often that’s one those couple extra bucks show up on the sties such as orbitz, travelocity, kayak, etc. I usually use those sites for research but always purchase on the airlines site.

@jumpthegun:

Good point, common sense to me but not all. I would honestly not drive even 40 minutes unless it was saving me at least $100+. I was thinking specifically of a friends in law who flew to Russia from Toronto (1.5hrs away) instead of our local airport. Saved him over $500.
