I have no idea where to start. I’ve got together some images of things I like and I’ve got the color settled. But how in the world do you go shopping for something that other people will be wearing? Especially when these people are on 3 different sides of the country. I’ve never even bought clothing for someone else as a Christmas gift or anything! 🙂
Do you pick a designer and look up if they are available near each bridesmaid? Do you go to a department store?
What was your strategy for your long distance bridesmaids?

I would start online, http://www.nordstrom.com, http://www.jcrew.com, http://www.anntaylor.com and any other website that sells dresses and has a good return policy! Alternatively, you could just assign them all a color or color family and make it ther problem 🙂

david’s bridal has stores all over. it would be convenient for your girls to go into one nearest them and try on dresses to see what looks good on them. they also have everything online so you can narrow it down for them. the other good thing is that if you are going with one colour but different styles, david’s bridal has swatches that are consistent throughout their lines.

If you don’t want to go the David’s Bridal or department store route, here’s my two cents:
I work PT in a bridal boutique, and we work with bridesmaids in different states (even different countries) all the time. I recommending going shopping somewhere local to you, with the bridesmaid(s) who are also local (or maybe a family member if none of your BMs are local?). By yourself is fine, too, of course! Before going, get an idea of dresses that your out of town BMs like, what their budget is, etc. Then, go shopping and find some options in the styles/colors/budget you’re considering. Afterwards, run the options past your Out of Town bridesmaids and see what they think. They should be able to find a store close to them that carries the dress(es) you like, and they can go try them on there. They can also get their measurements done and figure out what size they need, then call that info into your local bridal boutique where you’re ordering from (so everyone’s dress order is submitted together and all the dresses come from the same dyelot). A helpful bridal boutique should be able to help you with all of this, too, and help wrangle all the girls via phone or email to make sure the order gets submitted on time & all that other detail stuff you won’t want to worry about.
Sorry for that wall of text. Just trying to lay out the “standard” protocol from my experience!

I agree with @VanillaNut:. Only one of my six BM’s live near me. I had them all pick dresses online from Jcrew. What makes it nice is they didn’t have to get “sized” because they are just normal JCrew sizes. Super easy. I also picked a color that was discontinued so they were super cheap.

I was in a very similar situation. I currently live in southwestern VA, one of my bridesmaids is in northern VA, another in Baltimore, MD, another in New Hampshire and my Maid/Matron of Honor is in California. Having a color in mind definitely helped me. I looked online and found designers that had dresses in the color I wanted and then found a store that carried my favorite designers. I met up with my mom and 2 of my bridesmaids to check the dresses out in person. I wanted each girl to pick their own style, as long as it was in the chosen color and the same fabric. That first trip really narrowed things down- we found one designer with dresses that both girls really liked in the same color and fabric. From there, I just sent out an email to all of the girls and told them the designer, color and fabric choice and they went shopping and picked their favorites. We ordered all of the dresses through one store during a trunk show to get a discount and to make sure they’d all be in the same color lot. The only other thing I wish I had thought to do beforehand was to ask the girls what they would each be comfortable spending. Having a budget really helps narrow things down as well.
I hope this helps you! 🙂 Good luck!

I started getting ideas using http://www.weddingtonway.com – you can pick styles you like, bridesmaids can rank their favorites, and if you all decide on a dress you like, you can order it online. (Also make sure you email customer service for a group discount code…) They offer dresses from the major designers so there’s a good mix of dresses and price points.

I’m going to go with 2 BM’s when I’m in town and have them try on dresses. I will try them on too because I’m similar in size to the other 2 girls. If I couldn’t be with any of them, I would probably just go try on dresses myself!

Thanks so much for all the tips! Great advice from all different perspectives!

I am going with my sisters to try on the dresses and chose one. Then, my other out-of-state BMs will go to a store near them to get measured and order the dress. If there are no stores near them, they will just order from the store my sisters are getting them from and have them set to them for alterations.
