I’m from Australia so I don’t know much about US states but I would LOVE to visit Maine one day – it is so, so beautiful.

Do you want quiet? Busy? Urban? Rural? Mountains? Valleys? Coastal?

Mid-Atlantic diamonds in the rough, for us, would include: Smokey Mts, Blue Ridge Mts, Shenandoah Valley, Amish country, OBX, and Chesapeake Bay.

Beach house on the Outer Banks is always my top choice for an east coast vacation!

Cape Cod (although the weather can sometimes be iffy in June). If you decide on the Cape then you can even spend a few days in Martha’s Vineyard and/or Nantucket!

Without knowing if you want to do something urban, relaxing, explorative, etc., I would say maybe spend a week exploring a city!  Between NYC, Boston, DC, and Philadelphia, there are a lot of fun options if you’re into museums, art, food, and history.  If you want beaches, there are so many to choose from.. I only have experience with some Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland beaches, but they have all been fun.  It depends more so on if you want a quiet beach or a loud, party beach though.  I also love hiking and camping in the Northeast.  The Shendoah River Valley is really beautiful!  You could do fun things like tubing, ziplining, horsebackriding… Really, you have a lot of options with a budget like that!  I am excited to hear what you plan 🙂

Come to Canada – maybe the Maritimes (PEI, Nova Scotia). Your dollar will stretch further there and it’s beautiful!

What are quick/cheap flights totally depends on your home airport.  If you plug your local airport/s into http://www.kayak.com/direct it will show you where all you can fly nonstop… great planning tool IMO

I live in the mid-atlantic as well and I think you can fly to several Caribbean Islands in under four hours if you’re looking for a beach atmosphere. Cuba, DR, Bahamas would definitely be around 4 hours. Cape Cod does sound romantic though!

lunablu22:  cape cod is nice but expect lots of rocky beaches and unpredictable weather. with your budget and location i’d got to the florida keys or even st. augustine, which is a gorgeous european looking town with lots of nightlife, dining, and entertainment. cruises are also a great option! dh and i went on a carribean cruise a few years ago and had a blast.
