Caroline88:  what shape is the cut? And will you be able to see the diamond in person before you buy?

GIA XXX is a very broad category.  If you are a cut nut i would run it through the HCA and pick the one that scores 2 or below…if you can try to get an idealscope which will show light leakage. here is the link for HCA http://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

Since you can’t see either of them, you are really chancing this.  Is the SI1 eyeclean?  Have you seen many J colored diamonds?  The tint may bother some.

Caroline88:  I tend to be color sensitive, so I would probably go for the better color normally. But, since you won’t be able to see the stone in person before buying, I would say go with the higher clarity (slightly lower color). An Si1 stone can absolutely be eye-clean … and, even with an Si2, you can get a very nice clarity stone. But you can’t know that without seeing them in person. Also, J color is still going to be quite nice, particularly set in yellow gold — or if the stone flouresces. (not sure if I spelled that correctly. >.O)

For ex: My center stone is .90, round brilliant, and an Si1. It has a teeny carbon spot that I could see without magnification (although my jeweler couldn’t). But my little carbon bit is on the side and hidden by prongs. So we ended up getting a great deal on the stone. If the spot had been in the center or more visible, it wouldn’t have worked for me.

If I couldn’t see it beforehand, I’d go with the J and not risk the SI I having an inclusion smack dab in the middle of the table or something.

Also I think the yellow gold setting would work well with the J color.

We’ll if it’s SI1 or 2 then id go with the VS even if it wasn’t a little bigger. If it’s an excellent cut RB then the color will not be very different- it will look  white especially in yellow gold. I wouldn’t risk getting an SI2 I hadn’t seen.

If the cost is the same I would go for the best cut stone.  If they are the same, then I would go for the larger stone (measured in mm’s).  As long as you stay above SI2 clarity, you should be good. And there is no real color difference between an I and a J.

Caroline88:  In my opinion, it’s not enough information to make the best decision. You need to be able to see it…

Since you are setting it in yellow gold I would go with better clarity- so the J. I was not comfortable with anything under a VVS2- so clarity was a big deal to me. Also- cut can make a break a diamond- it’s all about cut- so that’s something I would ask about.
