So my boyfriend and I are trying to decide between two different diamonds. We are getting the round diamond at a pawn shop and then putting it in a setting from a local jeweler. Please help!
#1- .85ct, G-H.. Si1-Si2 $1600
#2- .70ct, G-H.. VS1 $1700
When I look at the diamonds under the lights I can’t really tell the different clarity wise. It is only when we took them outside that I could tell the VS1 sparkled a little bit more. Otherwise I am torn… the .85 is bigger for $100 less, but the .70 is a VS1. What should I do? Thanks for the advice!

Go for the bigger one as long as you can’t see any inclusions! Although, you probaby can’t tell much of a difference between .7 and .85 but still go for the one that looks the best to you – not based on stats!

At this point you should be paying more attention to the cut. Clarity does not make a diamond sparkle more or less. Cut does. All of the other factors are about the same.

The difference between a VS1 and an SI1-2 is not that noticeable to the naked eye. You will get more bang for your buck with the .85 ct option IMO

What’s the cut? That would be the deciding factor for me since the rest are pretty similar.

Those seem like SUPER inexpensive prices to me, for what you’re buying! 😀 You’ve got a great deal there, I would just make sure they’re GIA/AGS graded.

Can you have the cut, symmetry, and polish graded before you buy? That’s what I would base my decision on. The light return is what makes the sparkle.

What’s the cut for both of the diamonds?

PPs have said what I want to know. What is the cut for each diamond? Do they have fluorescence (faint? strong blue? none? etc) Do they come with a grading report? I’d say that GIA or AGS would make me feel more secure about the purchase.
Would they allow you to get a second opinion of the diamonds if they do not come with a grading report?
I wouldn’t buy from them unless you can find out more about each stone.

It depends on your wants in a diamond. Personally for me color and clarity were super important, but not size or necessarily cut(although I know that contributes to the sparkly). I would go for the VS1 because I probably wouldn’t really notice a size difference.

I’d go with the one that you said sparkles better/more!

@labradorlover: You didn’t mention what the cut is for either of them. Whichever sparkles more has the better cut.
If you see no inclusions (the stone is “eye clean”) then go with whichever one looks prettier to you.

Sparklier diamond… so that would mean the smaller one 🙂

when it comes to clarity, pretty much only you and your Fiance would know the specs of your ring. so the question is, would quality bother you? nobody else will notice.
I have a somewhat big inclusion in my ring but it’s still sparkles like crazy and I didn’t even notice that inculsion for an entire year. I’m sure nobody else would ever notice as long as I don’t point it out. If I had to choose between this one or a smaller one that was more flawless, I’d still go with the bigger, less expensive one.
