My Fiance and I have very different tastes in music, so picking a first dance song has been a bit of a challenge. We’ve narrowed it down to two choices, though:
1. Learning to Fly – Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, live acoustic version
2. Can’t Help Falling in Love – Elvis Presley
I love both songs, but I think we’re leaning toward the Tom Petty song. We saw them in concert when we’d been dating about a year, and this song was fantastic when played live. However, while to me it seems romantic because of that memory, I don’t know that the lyrics are all that romantic. I don’t even really know what the true meaning of the song is, though since it’s Tom Petty, part of me thinks parts of it are about drug use. I’m a little worried that later I might regret not having a more “romantic” song.
The Elvis song, on the other hand, is pretty straightforward, romantic, and traditional.
I guess my question for you all is which would you choose – the traditional romantic song, or the less conventional, less romantic song with more personal meaning? And for any of you who went with a less conventional song for your first dance, did you ever regret it later?
