I would only send STD’s to anyone you couldn’t stand to be absent.  They are definitely not required and often lead to problems later.  Remember that every person sent an STD is required to receive an invitation.  Make sure you have your venue, budget and numbers finalized before sending out the STD’s

I only sent STD’s to out of town guests that would need to make travel arrangements.  I then told all my other people I would really want to be there verbally the date.

I’d send them to everyone.  Even if someone is only attending the evening party, they still need to know to put aside time and the date to be there.  But just as you’re having separate invitations, I’d also have separate Save-The-Date Cards so they know what exactly they’ll be sent a formal invitation for later.

I was just thinking about this further and I think it would be wrong to send Save-The-Date Cards to essentially B list guests, if they aren’t even on the A list why would you ask/why would they reserve a day for you. They are B list for a reason and I don’t think its right to ask Blist guests to treat you party like an Alist event.
