    Ha! I didn’t even notice that the sentence makes no sense- I was totally just looking at the grammar.

    “A block of rooms has been reserved in the name of “Smith Jones” blah blah blah”

    Take out “of hotels” since that’s just a description of the block. It would be a block has been reserved, so its also a block of hotels has been reserved.

    It is “has.”  It refers to “group” and not to “hotels,” as “of hotels” is a prepositional phrase modifying “group.”  “Group” is the subject of the sentence, not “hotels.”  Trust me; I’m an English teacher.  🙂

    Whether it is a block or a group , “has” is correct for the singular.
