Miss-Joker:  This thread gives me hope. I have had many kidney stones, and the pain was excruciating. If childbirth is less painful than passing stones, then some of my fear of eventual childbirth (not planning to TTC for 2-3 more years), is assuaged.

They were both very similar for me. I was pretty much out of my mind and throwing up from the pain of both, and even though the labor was with “back labor” pain and no epidural, I would still say the kidney stone was very slightly worse. I might also feel more traumatized from the kidney stone because it was unexpected and I didn’t know what was happening.

But I have a friend with constant kidney stone issues, and while she’s in pain a lot, it’s not really losing-your-mind-omg-what-is-happening!! kind of pain, so I suppose it all just depends.

I’ve had kidney pain from infection and I’ve had vaginal delivery of twibs… i’d say the pain was comparable!

MissHockey:  Yeah, especially after my 7 mm kidney stone when I was 19. I had residual pain for a while afterwards. With most of my kidney stones there is a ton of pain and nausea, no matter the size! When we have kids, at least there will be a baby after the pain of labor has passed!

I haven’t had either but for the past few days I’ve had some pain in my upper left abdominal. Not excruciaing but there. How are kidney stones diagnosed? Mine seems to be better now though.

Anyway, pain in birth vs kidney stones reminds me of the Friends series when Rachel was giving birth while Joey was passing a kidney stone at the same time! Brings back many memories 🙂

My Fiance had to go to the ER for a kidney stone and they basically put a rod up his urethra(OW!). I’m pretty sure kidney stones are worse. He described it to me as urinating “jagged shards of glass” and he’s prone to them, the poor guy. I’ve had the displeasure of seeing the toilet completely filled from blood from his large kidney stone, it honestly looked like a heavy period to me, or someone dying…

He only drinks water to keep them at bay for fear of another ER visit.

Kidney stone was worse than labor, however an acute galbladder attack (resulting in emergency surgery) was worse than the kidney stone. The absolute worst of all was an internal hernia (very different than a normal hernia) which is basically your intestines getting trapped in a hole that broke through your abdominal wall. I begged my husband to kill me with that one. Ah fond memories lol.
