Credentials and price don’t matter nearly as much to me as the artist’s portfolio.  I would ask to see samples of their work and pick the one whose photos I liked more.

Have you viewed the work of your friend?  If possible, ask to see an album from a previous wedding (any photographer can occasionally take a good picture, especially shooting digital films and viewing all of the photographs from one wedding will give you a better idea of your friend’s work.)  Hiring a young photographer can work out great – some people have gotten amazing deals, and they are very happy with their pictures.  But it is very tricky to photograph a wedding – a white dress is difficult to light properly, especially against the groom’s black suit or tux.  With experience, photographers have a better sense of where to stand ahead of time and how to shoot unobtrusively.  Some bees have been heartbroken when they took a risk on a young photographer – it really needs to be your decision, based upon your personal priorities and budget.

I have to agree with SweetMelissa on this one.  Photos and Videos are all you will have to remember your wedding.  It is not really an area I would skimp on.  Take a look at both portfolios and see what style you like most.
